After stepping away from the popular military comedy MASH*, Gary Burghoff—best known for playing the kind yet clever Radar—chose to prioritize repairing his personal life over continuing his acting career.

Now 82, the Emmy-winning actor recently became a grandfather when his son, Miles “Sonar” Burghoff, welcomed a baby girl. Miles shared the news online with a playful fishing-themed caption, reflecting the passion for angling he inherited from his father. While Miles pursued a career as a professional fisherman rather than acting, his nickname “Sonar” pays tribute to Burghoff’s iconic role as Radar.

Burghoff has three children: sons Miles and Jordan with his second wife, Elizabeth Bolstrom, and daughter Gena Gayle from his first marriage to Janet Gayle. His second marriage ended in divorce in 2005, and Bolstrom passed away in 2019.

When Burghoff left MASH*, he did so without significant financial gain. He later explained that he deliberately chose family life over wealth and celebrity, believing it was difficult to fully have both. Instead of pursuing lucrative TV opportunities, including a potential role on Newhart, he opted for regional theater work, which allowed him more time at home.

Although his theater career eventually faded, it never matched the success he experienced on MASH*, where he portrayed Corporal Walter “Radar” O’Reilly across seven seasons. His demanding schedule on the show had already begun to strain his personal life, leading him to reduce his appearances before ultimately leaving in season seven. His emotional farewell episode reflected real struggles he was facing at home.

After his departure, the show continued with key cast members like Alan Alda, Loretta Swit, and Jamie Farr. Burghoff later briefly returned to the Radar role in spin-offs, though none achieved lasting success.

Despite being offered a $4 million contract to return, he declined. By 1991, financial difficulties left him nearly broke. At that point, he shifted focus to painting, creating detailed wildlife artwork that eventually sold for high prices.

In recent years, Burghoff has remained active in smaller ways, including supporting charitable causes. Fans continue to appreciate his work, many remembering how his performance on MASH* made them laugh, reflect, and feel deeply connected to the show.
