There were a lot of young stars in 1983’s “The Outsiders” who went on to have big careers in Hollywood. After more than 40 years, the movie’s director is talking about the interviews that made them stars.

Frank Ford Coppola posted videos of Tom Cruise, Diane Lane, Ralph Macchio, Matt Dillon, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Patrick Swayze, and other actors from their auditions for the part of a group of teenage Oklahoma greasers in his movie The Outsiders, which is based on S.E. Hinton’s 1967 book of the same name.

In one of the test tapes, Anthony Michael Hall reads for the part of Ponyboy, the movie’s main character. In the end, C. Thomas Howell got the part.

“We cast The Outsiders in a unique way 42 years ago. Along with the video clip, Coppola wrote, “We had all the actors on a soundstage together, and each actor would read for a different part.” He went on to say that while having each character watch his peers audition “could have been a volatile situation, it turned into a very positive one,”

In the description, the director wrote, “There grew a natural respect and sense of duty among them.” “The result worked beautifully and reminded me of my days as a camp counselor.”

Macchio, 62, said, “These auditions and this film experience still shape me today.” “Thank you, Francis (and Susie) ❤️.” In a separate statement, actor and director Eli Roth said that The Outsiders is a “instant classic.” Another actor, Frank Grillo, said that the tryout video was “amazing to see.”

In The Outsiders, which is set in Tulsa, Oklahoma in the 1960s, we follow Ponyboy Curtis (Howell), Darrel Curtis (Swayze), and Sodapop Curtis (Rob Lowe), along with their group of friends, after the losses of their parents. The story is mostly about fights between the group of “greasers” and the “Socs,” who are wealthier teens in the city.
Lane, 59, and Dillon, 60, worked together in Rumble Fish, another Coppola movie based on a Hinton book that came out in 1983.
