Britney Spears is opening out about a traumatic occurrence that she has kept a secret for the last 20 years.

PEOPLE has confirmed that the pop diva, who is now 41 years old, will disclose in her forthcoming book titled The Woman in Me that when she was dating Justin Timberlake, she fell pregnant with his child but ultimately chose to terminate the pregnancy.

“It came as a shock, but in my opinion, it was not a tragic event. I had a lot of affection for Justin. I never doubted for a second that we would eventually start a family together. “This would just be much earlier than I’d anticipated,” Spears writes of the pregnancy in the book. “This would just be much earlier than I’d anticipated.” “However, Justin was not at all pleased with the news of the pregnancy. He told us that our lives were not prepared for having a kid and that we were far too young to do so.

PEOPLE reached out to a representative for Timberlake for comment, but they did not immediately reply.

In the book, she states, “If it had been up to me alone, I never would have done it.” And despite this, Justin was very certain that he did not want to become a parent.

Spears writes in her journal that following through with the abortion was “one of the most agonizing things I have ever experienced in my life.”

After Spears and Timberlake divorced in 2002, she went on to have children with her second husband, Kevin Federline. Her oldest son, Sean Preston, is now 18 years old, while her younger son, Jayden James, is 17 years old.

On October 24, Spears will finally release her much awaited book, which will be published by Simon & Schuster’s subsidiary Gallery Books.

The publishing of the book comes close to two years after Spears was finally freed from the court-ordered conservatorship that had been in place for the previous 13 years. After Spears passionately testified in public court proceedings in June 2021, the conservatorship was finally revoked in November 2021.

According to a press release issued by Gallery Books, the singer’s memoir “illuminates the enduring power of music and love — and the importance of a woman telling her own story, on her own terms.” The press release also promises to reveal “for the first time her incredible journey (and) strength at the core of one of the greatest performers in the history of pop music.”
