When Benjamin Hightower walked onto the America’s Got Talent stage, few expected the depth of emotion and talent he was about to deliver. The U.S. Air Force veteran, who served seven years on active duty, auditioned for Season 20 with Chappell Roan’s bold hit “Pink Pony Club,” instantly electrifying the room. By the end of his performance, the audience was on its feet and the judges were clearly moved.

Hightower’s passion for music began in childhood after a memorable Broadway trip to see The Phantom of the Opera. Despite that early inspiration, his life initially followed a different direction—military service. After years in uniform, he made the difficult decision to pursue music full-time, describing it as the most frightening and challenging choice he has ever made.

This wasn’t Hightower’s first appearance on AGT. Back in 2017, he competed as the lead vocalist for the U.S. Air Force a cappella group In the Stairwell, which advanced to the semi-finals. This time, however, he stood alone on stage, and the moment carried far more personal meaning. Ahead of his audition, he shared how the song’s theme of leaving Tennessee in search of freedom and authenticity mirrored his own life. With his mother watching from the crowd, he delivered the performance with raw emotion, later saying, “I’m singing it to her.”

The judges responded enthusiastically. Sofia Vergara called the audition “perfect,” while Mel B praised his distinctive rasp and vibrato. Simon Cowell added that he loved both the song and Hightower’s interpretation, noting his genuine heart. With four unanimous yes votes, Hightower earned his spot in the next round of the competition.
