A heartbreaking accident claimed the lives of two teenage best friends as they were traveling to their school prom, turning what should have been a joyful evening into a devastating tragedy.

Kiea McCann, 17, and Dlava Mohamed, 16, were passengers in a car driven by 61-year-old family friend Anthony McGinn. The group was on their way to a formal event in County Monaghan, Ireland, in July 2023 when the crash occurred.

Reports indicate that McGinn was driving at a very high speed before losing control of the vehicle, which left the road and collided with a tree. Despite repeated requests from those in the car to slow down, the driver continued at an unsafe pace.

Another passenger later told the court that the situation inside the car had become frightening as the speed increased. It was reported that the vehicle had been traveling far above the legal limit just before the accident.

Tragically, both girls lost their lives at the scene. They had been close friends, and their loss deeply affected their families and community.

Also in the car was Dlava’s sister, Avin, who suffered serious injuries and later faced a long recovery. She reportedly struggled with memory loss and the emotional impact of the event.

In May, Anthony McGinn was sentenced to seven years in prison after admitting to dangerous driving causing death. The court described his actions as a serious breach of trust, especially given his relationship with the family.

Kiea’s mother expressed her grief, saying that no sentence could truly bring justice for the loss of her daughter.

The tragedy has left a lasting impact, serving as a painful reminder of the importance of road safety and responsible driving.

Rest in peace, Kiea McCann and Dlava Mohamed.
