Nicholas Brendon, best known for his role as Xander Harris on the iconic TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, passed away on Friday, March 20.

His family confirmed the news in a statement shared with The Hollywood Reporter, revealing that he died of natural causes.

“We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon,” the statement read.

“He passed away peacefully in his sleep from natural causes. Many remember Nicky for his work as an actor and the characters he brought to life over the years. In recent years, he found joy and expression in painting and art, sharing his passion with family, friends, and fans. Nicky was passionate, sensitive, and deeply driven to create. Those who truly knew him recognized his art as a pure reflection of who he was.

“While Nicholas faced challenges in the past, he was on treatment and medication to manage his health and remained optimistic about the future. Our family asks for privacy during this time as we mourn his loss and celebrate a life lived with intensity, imagination, and heart. Thank you to everyone who has offered love and support.”

Following his success on Buffy the Vampire Slayer—where he was a mainstay across all seven seasons—Brendon continued to act in film and television, with credits extending as recently as 2021.

Off-screen, he struggled publicly with substance abuse and mental health issues. Over the years, he faced multiple arrests, including charges of felony vandalism, resisting officers, criminal mischief, and felony corporal injury to a spouse.

In 2023, Brendon revealed he had experienced a heart attack and had a congenital heart defect. He also suffered from cauda equina syndrome, a serious spinal condition requiring multiple surgeries.

Following the news, Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played Buffy, shared a heartfelt tribute on social media. Posting a photo of herself with Brendon from 1998, she referenced one of Xander’s most famous lines:

“‘They’ll never know how tough it is to be the one who isn’t chosen. To live so near to the spotlight, and never step in it. But I know. I see more than anybody realises, because nobody’s watching me,’” she wrote.

She added: “I saw you, Nicky. I know you are at peace, in that big rocking chair in the sky.”

Rest in peace, Nicholas Brendon.
