Optical illusions have a way of driving people wild. No matter how much you try to avoid being fooled, your brain inevitably gets tricked. One illusion currently leaving the internet puzzled is a photo of six girls sitting on a couch — yet only five pairs of legs are visible. How is that possible? Let’s break it down.
I’ve always been fascinated by optical illusions, and now one particular image is confusing thousands online. According to the Queensland Brain Institute, an optical illusion happens “when our brain and eyes try to communicate in simple terms, but the message gets mixed up.”
They explain that sometimes the brain believes the eyes are detecting movement even when they aren’t. Our senses evolved this way because early humans needed to quickly spot motion — like a predator rustling in the bushes — to survive.
A Reddit post recently brought this puzzling photo into the spotlight. It shows six girls seated on a sofa, but only five pairs of legs can be seen. It looks as though one girl’s legs have vanished, prompting users to search for the explanation.
According to The Tab, one commenter suggested that the second girl’s legs are tucked behind those of the girl on the far left, making them invisible from the camera angle.
Another Reddit user, ElMangosto, examined the photo closely and shared what many believe is the real explanation.
He explained:
“From left to right, girls #1 through #4: Girl #1 has her legs crossed with no rip in the knee area. Girl #2 has only one leg visible, and you can spot the tear in her knee. Their legs overlap so much they visually merge. If you trace the tear downward, you’ll notice a split where one side has a sock and the other doesn’t — girl #2 has the torn knee and the white sock. Girls #2 and #3 are leaning heavily forward. Imagine #3’s hand braced on the seat behind girl #4 to help her balance.”
