An 8-year-old student in Simpsonville, South Carolina, tragically drowned in a pond near his elementary school after disappearing from campus on September 12, 2024.
The child, identified as Lionel Ramirez Cervantes, was a second grader at Bells Crossing Elementary. He was last seen at school around 11 a.m. before he unexpectedly ran from his classroom and out of the building. At the time, he was with two classmates and three staff members, who tried to follow him but were unable to keep up.
The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office quickly launched a large-scale search. At 2:10 p.m., officials urged the community to remain in their vehicles and check home security systems instead of searching on foot, as tracking dogs were being used to follow Lionel’s scent.
Sadly, just two hours later, the search ended in heartbreak. Around 3 p.m., dive team members located Lionel’s body in a body of water off Lenox Lake Drive, not far from the school.
In a statement, the sheriff’s office said: “We are heartbroken to report that 8-year-old Lionel Ramirez Cervantes, who ran from Bells Crossing Elementary, has been located in a body of water near the school. Victim coordinators are working with the family during this devastating time. Our prayers are with them.”
Lionel’s mother, Dalia Cervantes, a single mother of five, expressed her grief in a Facebook post later that day.
“Today I got a call from Lionel’s school saying he was missing. Hours later he was found in a nearby creek. I know he’s now in a better place with his dad, but my boy should not have lost his life this way,” she wrote.
Calling her son’s death a result of “negligence,” she added: “Now I am left without my Leo. I want to thank everyone who has shared condolences and support. I saw the video, and it does not justify their actions.”
May he rest in peace.
