Dylan Jay Watts, a 28-year-old father from Broulee, New South Wales, tragically passed away on March 22 from a severe bacterial infection that left his lungs riddled with 72 holes. Though friends and family knew he was unwell, his rapid decline came as a devastating shock.

Dylan, a devoted dad, had expressed the joy and purpose his son brought to his life. Sadly, he won’t get to celebrate more birthdays or watch his child grow.

His health struggles began in 2021 when scans revealed two holes in his lungs. By mid-2024, the number had escalated to 72. His sister, Caitlyn, recalled that he had spent three weeks hospitalized after coughing up blood and was warned that delays in care could have been fatal.

Throughout his illness, Dylan endured chronic coughing, exhaustion, reflux, and mental health challenges. By early 2024, a lung hemorrhage prompted a prolonged hospital stay and intensive treatment, with medications and antibiotics filling an entire backpack. Despite this, he remained hopeful, determined to recover, though doctors warned the severity of his condition made survival past 30 unlikely.

Just days before his death, Dylan’s mother, Suzanne, brought him and his puppy home to arrange long-term care. He passed away five days later, shortly before his 29th birthday.

To help cover funeral costs, a GoFundMe campaign was launched with a goal of AU$6,000, raising over AU$4,600 so far. Caitlyn urged loved ones to cherish those around them, writing, “Let this be a reminder that those you love can be gone in an instant… His memory and story will be remembered by many.” Family friend Cheyenne O’Brien emphasized the shock and grief the family continues to face and encouraged donations to honor Dylan’s life.
