At least eight people lost their lives and 13 others were injured when a hot air balloon crashed in southern Brazil on Saturday, June 21.
The tragic incident occurred over Praia Grande in Santa Catarina state, a region popular for balloon rides. What began as a peaceful flight turned into a catastrophe when a fire broke out in the basket mid-air, sending the balloon into a deadly descent.
Shocking video footage shows the balloon engulfed in flames as it fell from the sky. Survivors later revealed that the pilot, realizing the severity of the fire, urged passengers to jump just before the balloon got too high. Thirteen people, including the pilot, managed to leap to safety. However, after their departure lightened the load, the balloon ascended again—this time with eight people still inside—before ultimately crashing and burning.
Investigators suspect a backup burner stored inside the basket may have reignited unexpectedly. The pilot told local media that it might have been the ignition source. High wind conditions at takeoff and a truck pulling the balloon with cables may have also contributed to the tragedy by triggering a gas leak.
The victims included two couples, a mother and daughter, a doctor, and a figure skater. Some were reportedly found hugging each other in their final moments, according to police.
Witnesses described horrific scenes at the crash site, including people on fire and bodies in the nearby pasture. Emergency crews responded quickly but warned the public to keep their distance due to gas leaks and explosion risks.
In the wake of the disaster, the balloon company, Sobrevoar Serviços Turísticos, has suspended its operations indefinitely. Authorities, including Brazil’s aviation agency, have opened a full investigation, and officials have promised results within 30 days.
This marks Brazil’s second fatal balloon accident in just a few weeks, prompting growing concern over safety regulations in the country’s balloon tourism industry.
