John Goodman has undergone a dramatic transformation, shedding nearly 200 pounds over the past two decades. Known for his roles in The Big Lebowski and Roseanne, the actor turned his life around after becoming sober in 2007. His appearance at the recent premiere of the new Smurfs film revealed a much slimmer physique, sparking both admiration and concern among fans.
Throughout his career, Goodman struggled with weight issues. At his heaviest, he weighed close to 400 pounds. In a 2011 interview with David Letterman, he admitted to losing around 60 pounds each spring after filming Roseanne, only to gain it back — and more — each year. He described it as a lifelong cycle.
After entering rehab in 2007 to address his alcohol use, Goodman made a serious commitment to his health. He began working with fitness expert Mackie Shilstone, who had also trained tennis champion Serena Williams. Goodman adopted a Mediterranean-style diet filled with vegetables, fruits, fish, nuts, and olive oil, and started exercising regularly, five to six times per week.
By 2010, his efforts had paid off — he had lost over 100 pounds. Goodman emphasized that the change didn’t happen overnight and that it required careful planning and a strong desire to succeed.
In a 2016 interview with ABC, he explained that he had stopped mindless eating and drinking. “I was eating like I drank — compulsively,” he said. He acknowledged that aging made it harder to ignore health concerns and that he grew tired of what he saw in the mirror. “It became dangerous,” he admitted.
In 2023, Goodman told Rolling Stone that he had lost 200 pounds total and had developed a love for boxing, which he described as a great workout involving punching drills, bag work, and footwork practice.
Despite maintaining a healthier lifestyle, Goodman faced a setback earlier in 2024 when he suffered a hip injury while filming. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he explained that he fell while wearing slippery socks during a scene rehearsal. He landed hard on his hip and couldn’t stand, later discovering through X-rays that it was fractured.
A doctor on set quickly arranged for him to be treated at the Cleveland Clinic in London, where he underwent surgery the next morning. He spent about a month recovering and described the period as frustrating but ultimately successful in getting back on his feet.
Most recently, Goodman lent his voice to the new Smurfs movie. When he attended the Los Angeles premiere on July 13, fans noticed his even slimmer appearance. While some praised his achievement, many expressed concern on social media, describing him as “too thin” or looking “gaunt.” One fan noted the natural effects of aging and weight loss, like sagging skin due to reduced collagen.
Speculation also swirled about whether Goodman had used the weight-loss drug Ozempic, though there was no confirmation. Still, plenty of fans celebrated his transformation, calling it impressive and inspiring.
