Beach Vacation Ends in Tragedy: Family of Four Killed in North Carolina Plane Crash
What began as a joyful beach getaway turned into a heartbreaking tragedy when a small plane carrying a North Carolina family crashed on July 7, claiming the lives of all four passengers — a mother, father, and their two young children.
Travis and Candace Buchanan, both 35, were returning home to Sanford, North Carolina, with their kids — 10-year-old Aubrey and 9-year-old Walker — after vacationing in Florida, according to People. The family had departed Merritt Island earlier that morning, en route to Sanford Raleigh Executive Airport.
But just before 1:40 p.m., and less than 20 minutes from their destination, their single-engine Cirrus SR22T aircraft, which was registered to Travis, crashed in a wooded area near the airport under still-unconfirmed circumstances.
Emergency responders reached the site around 2:03 p.m. Three of the four occupants were pronounced dead at the scene, while the fourth was transported to a hospital but sadly did not survive.
A Community in Mourning
The Buchanans were well-known and deeply loved in their community, where they ran Buchanan Farms. News of their sudden and tragic loss has devastated neighbors, friends, and fellow farmers.
“This is simply unimaginable. My heart aches thinking of those final moments,” wrote Pint Sized Pasture in a moving Facebook tribute. “The Buchanans weren’t just fellow farmers — they were pillars of our community. Their generosity and presence meant so much.”
Visit NC Farms echoed those sentiments, calling Buchanan Farms “a place where time slowed down and families made lasting memories. Their passing is a loss that touches countless lives.”
Remembered and Revered
Local businesses also shared their grief. Los Charros Mexican Restaurant remembered the Buchanans not just as patrons, but as friends. “Travis once brought in samples from his harvest. We even named a margarita after his farm,” the restaurant shared in a post. “Our hearts are heavy.”
Even amid the tragedy, the spirit of the Buchanans endures. Neighbor Rebekah Angel Walters described seeing workers silently tending to the fields of Buchanan Farms — a quiet, powerful tribute to the family’s enduring legacy. “That wave from the man on the tractor broke my heart,” she wrote.
Preliminary Findings: Engine Trouble
While investigations are ongoing, early reports from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) suggest that the pilot — believed to be one of the parents — had radioed in to report engine trouble, along with the loss of communication and navigation systems, just before the crash.
Officials continue to investigate what caused the fatal incident.
A family loved by many, the Buchanans are remembered for their warmth, community spirit, and the farm they built together. Their tragic passing has left a void that will be felt across Sanford and beyond.
