An 11-year-old succumbed after a diagnosis of what was believed to be a “routine flu.”
Mateo Deveraturda of Napier, New Zealand, was admitted to Hawke’s Bay Hospital and then transferred to a hospital in Auckland after a flu illness progressed to severe complications, as reported by the New Zealand Herald.
On Tuesday, June 25, his family announced on a Givealittle website that Mateo had died.
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of our cherished Mateo, who departed at 6:15 a.m. on June 25, 2025.” “Accompanied by family, he confronted his journey with fortitude and departed peacefully,” the statement said.
They said, “Mateo will return to Napier on Thursday, June 26, where he will repose at the family residence for the subsequent days.”
The family first sought help from the public after Mateo’s admission to pediatric critical care.
“Without divulging excessive personal details, Mateo recounted how a routine flu rapidly progressed into a life-threatening condition,” the description said. His parents brought him to the doctor on Tuesday in Hawke’s Bay, where he was sent to Hastings Hospital for emergency treatment. Later that night, he was airlifted from Hawke’s Bay Hospital to Starship Children’s Hospital and is now in an induced coma, battling for his life due to multiple organ failure.
They said that the contributed funds will be allocated to their expenditures, since “being away from home incurs substantial costs for meals and travel.” Your kind assistance will mitigate these challenges, enabling them to concentrate only on Mateo’s recuperation.
