Tragic new details have emerged about the unexpected death of celebrity chef Anne Burrell.

News broke yesterday that Burrell was found unresponsive in her Brooklyn apartment on the morning of June 17, 2025. Emergency responders were unable to resuscitate her, and she was pronounced dead at just 55 years old.

Reportedly, Burrell had seemed joyful and full of life the evening before. On June 16, she participated in an improv comedy performance at The Second City in Brooklyn — the final show of her improv course, as shared on her Instagram.

“She was amazing and seemed so happy,” a source told People. Another person who attended the event confirmed, “Anne was her usual lively, cheerful self and appeared to be having a great time during and after the show.”

According to the New York City Police Department, Burrell was found “unconscious and unresponsive” and declared dead at the scene.

Newly surfaced reports reveal that Burrell was discovered lying on the shower floor by her husband, Stuart Claxton. Law enforcement sources reportedly told TMZ that Claxton had last seen her alive around 1 a.m. He found her lifeless body roughly six to seven hours later in their bathroom.

The Daily Mail reported that Claxton dialed 911 and was instructed to begin CPR, but it was too late—her body was already cold. A likely cause of death has since been suggested, with the New York Fire Department confirming they had responded to a cardiac arrest call at 7:50 a.m. that morning.

Burrell’s family released a statement honoring her memory:
“Anne was a cherished wife, daughter, sister, stepmother, and friend. Her smile lit up every space she entered. She touched millions of lives with her warmth and love, which will live on forever.”

Born in Cazenovia, New York, on September 21, 1969, Burrell’s love for cooking began in childhood, heavily influenced by her mother’s meals and Julia Child’s iconic work.

Through her TV appearances, especially on Worst Cooks in America, she aimed to make cooking approachable and fun. She encouraged beginners to see mistakes as part of the learning process and often emphasized the importance of preparation:
“Don’t just wing it. Find a recipe that speaks to you, read it thoroughly from start to finish, and then get started,” she once advised.

Anne met Stuart Claxton on Bumble in 2018. The two got engaged during the 2020 lockdown and were married in October 2021, surrounded by close friends and fellow Food Network personalities.

In a 2023 People interview, Anne reflected on married life: “I love being married. We’re always together since Stuart works from home, and we get to share all of life’s adventures.” Stuart added, “It’s truly been amazing.”

The couple had been enjoying their life in a renovated Brooklyn home, building their future together in a space filled with love and laughter.
