After the senator from California was almost thrown to the ground for interrupting the briefing in order to talk to Noem about the continuing ICE raids in Los Angeles, politicians rushed to social media in order to express their reactions before the incident.
Immediately after the detention and handcuffing of United States Senator Alex Padilla by law enforcement officials, who had attempted to grab the attention of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem during a news conference addressing the current rioting in Los Angeles, lawmakers from all across the nation rushed to social media to express their reactions.
In the video that was taken during the incident, the Democrat from California can be heard yelling questions that he had for Noem before being shoved out of the room by a group of guys.
Following that, he is handed over to two FBI officials who were supporting the Secret Service in guarding Noem, according to individuals inside the law enforcement community who spoke to TMZ. Padilla gives the impression of being resistant when he is requested to place his hands behind his back. He offers the cops the phrase “hands off” before he is almost forced to lie face down on the ground as they handcuff him.
As a result of the event, the Department of Homeland Security issued a statement in which it accused Padilla of engaging in “disrespectful political theater” by interrupting a live news conference.

According to that statement, Padilla did not identify himself or cooperate with the requests of the officers, and as a result, they “acted appropriately.” However, as the video from the event demonstrates, Padilla did reveal himself before trying to speak his piece about the continuing turmoil in Los Angeles over the ICE raids. It was also verified by the Department of Homeland Security that Noem met with Padilla for fifteen minutes after his short detention.
Governor Gavin Newsom of California expressed his indignation about the event by posting a message on X, urging people to “end” the way elected leaders are treated at this time.
Alex Padilla, the Senator, is one of the most honorable individuals I am acquainted with. This is not just ridiculous but also authoritarian and embarrassing. Trump’s shock soldiers are completely out of control at this point. As Newsom tweeted, “This must come to an end now.”
A similar attitude was expressed by Karen Bass, the Mayor of Los Angeles, in a tweet that said, “What just happened to Senator Alex Padilla is absolutely abhorrent and outrageous.” In the United States Senate, he is currently serving. It is imperative that this government put a halt to its cruel onslaught on our city. “Senator Alex Padilla is a noble person and a public servant who operates with integrity. According to a letter sent by Hakeem Jeffries, a Democrat from Brooklyn who is a member of the House of Representatives, “the brazen and aggressive manhandling of Senator Padilla by the Trump administration is a sickening disappointment.” Any individual who attacked the Senator need to be held responsible for their actions. There is no one who is above the law.
The event was described as a “abuse of power” by Representative Norma Torres of California, who was seen in a video that was shared with X. She also blamed President Donald Trump and his administration of failing to ensure the safety of Californians in the midst of the current disturbance.
Let’s go ahead and call it what it is: a shameful demonstration of power abuse. According to what she posted, Senator Alex Padilla was taken out of the room and arrested because he had the audacity to challenge Secretary Noem. This was not a threat; rather, it was a criticism. They are not protecting us; rather, they are putting us out of control.
