Dylan’s friends were aware that he had been sick and facing health challenges.

However, no one could have predicted how suddenly he would be taken from them — and the discovery made in his lungs makes the situation even more unsettling.

Dylan Jay Watts, a 28-year-old from Broulee on the New South Wales coast of Australia, was many things, but most importantly, he was a dedicated father. When his son was born, he shared a heartfelt message: “Words cannot describe how much more purpose I feel with you in my life!”

Sadly, Dylan won’t have the chance to watch his child grow up or celebrate future birthdays.

His unexpected passing on March 22, due to a severe bacterial infection, came as a devastating shock, even though he had been dealing with serious health problems.

Family friend Cheyenne O’Brien shared, “Even though Dylan had been critically ill in the weeks and days leading up to his death, his loved ones were still shocked.”

A rapid decline
Dylan’s health began deteriorating in 2021 when doctors discovered two holes in his lungs during a scan. By mid-2024, the number of holes had alarmingly increased to 72.

His sister Caitlyn told Daily Mail Australia, “I learned last July how serious it had become. He had holes in his lungs and had been hospitalized for three weeks after coughing up blood.” She added, “His doctor said if he hadn’t sought help when he did, it could have been fatal.”

Dylan struggled with persistent symptoms like chronic coughing, reflux, extreme fatigue, and mental health difficulties. After a lung hemorrhage sent him to the hospital for three weeks, he sought specialized medical care in early 2024 when over-the-counter treatments failed.

Caitlyn described the intensity of his treatment, saying, “He was on so much medication and antibiotics that it filled an entire backpack.”

Despite his declining health, Dylan remained optimistic. “He was very sick but continued to fight for his health and stayed hopeful for some kind of recovery,” Caitlyn said. Doctors, however, had warned that the severity of the lung bacteria made it unlikely he would live beyond 30.

A grieving family
Just days before his death, Dylan’s mother, Suzanne, brought him and his dog, Polar, home to set up long-term care. Heartbreakingly, he passed away five days later, just before his 29th birthday. His family is still struggling to comprehend how quickly his condition worsened.

To help cover funeral expenses, a GoFundMe campaign was launched with a goal of AU$6,000, and has raised over AU$4,600 so far.

On the fundraiser page, Caitlyn wrote, “This is a reminder that loved ones can be gone in an instant. Hold them close and tell them you love them. We are all fragile.” She added, “Dylan’s memory and story will live on among those who loved him. He will be deeply missed.”

O’Brien shared similar feelings: “Even though Dylan had been unwell, his death has shocked his loved ones, who are now not only grieving but also managing the stress of planning his farewell.” She encouraged, “Please donate and share to help Dylan’s family give him the send-off he deserves. Thank you from Dylan’s family.”
