16-year-old Elijah Heacock from Glasgow, Kentucky, was targeted in a ‘sextortion scam’ earlier this year by a cybercriminal.
The scammer threatened to release fake explicit images of Elijah to people he knew unless he paid $3,000. Not long after, Elijah took his own life by a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Following his death, his mother, Shannon Heacock, has spoken publicly about what happened. The FBI believes Elijah was a victim of sextortion.
“Elijah was doing well. We had no reason to suspect any problems,” his father, John Burnett, shared. “We didn’t know anything about sextortion or how it operates.”
In another interview, he added, “The people preying on our children are highly organized, well-funded, and relentless. They don’t even need real photos; they can create whatever they want using technology, then use it to extort the child.”
Shannon explained that the scammers demanded $3,000 from Elijah, and he had already sent them the small amount of money he had.
Now, in addition to their grief, Elijah’s family is facing over $30,000 in medical bills from his hospitalization following the shooting and the costs of his funeral.
The family has started a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the overwhelming financial burden caused by this tragedy.
“Our beloved son Elijah Heacock was only 16 when we lost him to a devastating act of sextortion,” the fundraiser reads. “He was our world — a loving twin, a wonderful son, and a cherished brother. He brought immense joy to our family and everyone who knew him.”
“Elijah loved his school, playing tennis, spending time with friends, and being part of his community. His kindness and vibrant energy touched so many lives, and his loss has left an irreplaceable void in our hearts,” the family shared.
“As we grieve Elijah, we are also facing significant emotional and financial challenges. The loss of work and mounting expenses have made this time even harder. We never expected to be in a situation where we are struggling to manage everyday costs while mourning such a deep loss. We’re reaching out for support to help us navigate these hardships and regain some stability as we try to heal,” they wrote.
“We are incredibly thankful for any support during this unimaginable time. Your kindness means more than words can say and will allow us to focus on honoring Elijah’s memory and caring for each other. Thank you for standing with us.”
