A recommendation for parole was made on Friday, May 30, for Patricia Krenwinkel, who had previously been a follower of Charles Manson, the leader of the cult.
According to CBS, the state parole board in California identified Krenwinkel as having a low likelihood of committing another crime in the future.
Commissioner Gilbert Infante was quoted as saying, “This decision does not minimize or forgive the criminal conduct or the loss your victims and their families have suffered,” as reported by CBS8. “At the time of these offenses, you had all of the characteristics that are characteristic of young people. As we consider your following development, we can see that you have made significant progress, and this is shown by the work that you have done.
A review of the judgment made by the panel is now required to be conducted by the Board of Parole Hearings, followed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which may take up to one hundred fifty days.
Krenwinkel was 21 years old when she and followers of Charles Manson went on a two-day murder spree in August 1969. They killed pregnant actress Sharon Tate, coffee heiress Abigail Folger, Wojciech Frykowski, Steven Earl Parent, and Jay Sebring. The following night, they killed grocer Leno LaBianca and his wife, Rosemary. Prosecutors referred to this as Manson’s attempt to start a race war.
According to the New York Times, Krenwinkel, who is now 77 years old, testified that she stabbed Folger a total of 28 times. She then assisted in the murder of the LaBiancas the next evening and allegedly inscribed “Death to Pigs” in blood on the walls of the building, as reported by the Times.
In April of 1971, she was found guilty of seven charges of first-degree murder and sentenced to death for each of those accounts. After it was determined that the death penalty in California violated the state’s constitution in 1972, she was resentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after the decision.
The year 1976 was the first time that Krenwinkel, who was the female convict who had served the longest sentence in the California prison system, was eligible for release. There have been sixteen times that she has been before the state parole board.

After highlighting the fact that Krenwinkel still constituted “an unreasonable danger to society if paroled at this time,” Newsom overturned the decision made by the Board of Parole Hearings for her release in the year 2022.
According to The Associated Press, Newsom said that “Ms. Krenwinkel fully accepted Mr. Manson’s racist and apocalyptic ideologies.” Not only was Ms. Krenwinkel a victim of Mr. Manson’s torture, but she was also a victim of other abuses. In addition to this, she was a crucial contributor to the violence and sorrow that formed the legacy of the Manson Family.
On Friday, Anthony DiMaria, who is Jay Sebring’s nephew, made a statement at the court.
DiMaria is quoted as saying, “Patricia Krenwinkel is not a follower, nor is she a victim,” as reported by CBS8. “She is a ruthless murderer who has taken the lives of eight people. Given that I take into account the murder of Tate’s unborn child, the number that is more appropriate is eight. Every single one of Krenwinkel’s victims had their rights completely eradicated. The book “Helter Skelter” was not written in blood by Charles Manson. Her name is Patricia Krenwinkel. She is the creator of messages that were splattered with blood and horrified people all over the globe. Patricia Krenwinkel should be released from prison after her victims have been released from their graves.
People was able to receive a statement from Krenwinkel’s parole counsel, Keith Wattley, who said that the offender ought to be released into the community.
“After 56-and-a-half years of incarceration with no rule violations, with substantial change in who she is, and with the last nine psychological evaluators over the past 40 years agreeing that Pat is no longer a risk, it’s time to make the possibility of parole a reality,” he said to reporters.
“Pat has fully accepted responsibility for everything she did, everything she contributed to, every twisted philosophy she embraced and endorsed and, most importantly, every life she destroyed by her actions in 1969,” Wattley finished his remarks.
“In order to confront her experiences as both a perpetrator and a sufferer of violence, Pat has engaged in rigorous therapy and group counseling. This has enabled her to comprehend how she was able to bring about this catastrophe, and it has also enabled her to assist others on their own paths to recovery. Additionally, this example demonstrates what occurs when we do not formally provide any option that is focused on healing to those who have survived horrific crime. Pat and I hope that they may find serenity in the future, if they are ever able to find it after the damage that she inflicted.
A petition has been created by Debra Tate, Sharon Tate’s sister, in reaction to the suggestion, with the goal of preventing Krenwinkel from being granted parole.
“Society cannot allow this serial killer who committed such horrible, gruesome, random killings back out,” she said in her letter. “I am asking for your help by letting the parole board know that you do not want to see her get released by signing this petition.”
As of Monday morning, it has received 116,790 signatures from individuals.
He passed while in jail in the year 2017.
