Jeff Sperbeck, a sports agent, passed away on Wednesday afternoon, about four days after he was said to have suffered a traumatic brain injury after falling off a moving golf cart with John Elway, a longtime client and friend of his.

Sperbeck has reached the age of 62.

In a statement released on Wednesday, April 30, the Riverside Sheriff Coroner’s Office verified that Sperbeck had passed away and said that his next of kin had been informed. According to the office of the coroner, the injuries sustained by Sperbeck occurred on Saturday evening, soon after 7 o’clock.

According to a prior article by PEOPLE, Sperbeck was there at the time of the event with John Elway, a quarterback who is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The former National Football League player and general manager of the Denver Broncos, who is now 64 years old, was formerly business colleagues with Sperbeck, who was also the quarterback’s agent while he was playing in the NFL.

When the event took place on Saturday night, Sperbeck and Elway were reportedly present at The Madison Club in La Quinta, California, according to a report from a local news site called KESQ. When Sperbeck slid off the back of the cart, Elway was acting as the driver, according to witnesses who spoke to the source.

According to KESQ, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office has announced that it has begun an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Sperbeck’s death. In an effort to get further information, individuals have contacted the sheriff’s office.

It was reported earlier on Wednesday by TMZ that Sperbeck was placed on life support after suffering what was described as a “traumatic brain injury.” He was only able to be kept alive for a short period of time so that his organs could be donated because of his condition. An further story from the publication states that Elway was the one who called 911 for the first time after Sperbeck had fallen.

“We got there, and unfortunately, [Sperbeck] was lying on the ground, and there were people surrounding him just trying to make sure he was okay,” according to Ali Simon, a witness who spoke to the KESQ.

“There were people on the phone, and they were just trying to get assistance there as quickly as they possibly could. It was so terrifying; it was unlike anything that we had ever seen before. There is no way that you could even imagine yourself ever being a witness to anything like that.

There is a winery called 7Cellars that was established jointly by Sperbeck and Elway. There are over one hundred National Football League players that Sperbeck represented throughout his tenure as an agent, including John Elway, as stated on the website of their company. Beginning in 1990, the two-time Super Bowl winner started working with Sperbeck. In addition, he assisted the retired NFL player in opening other eateries under his own brand.
