During the course of the illustrious reality program America’s Got Talent, how many extraordinary talents have been shown to the audience? There have been many performers of all ages and from all walks of life who have enthralled audiences with their singing, dancing, magic, acrobatics, stunts, beatboxing, mind-reading, animal acts, and other forms of entertainment. Moments such as D’Corey Johnson, who is just 11 years old, trying out for the 18th season of the program serve as a reminder that there is always space for surprises, even when you believe you have seen all there is to see.
At the age of twelve, D’Corey, who is originally from Louisville, Kentucky, bravely made his way onto the American Idol stage, demonstrating that despite his tender years, he has the self-assurance and ability necessary to compete with the most accomplished contestants. During the pre-performance interview, the aspiring Broadway singer and future movie star expressed his self-assurance to the judge, Sofia Vergara, by saying, “I feel that I can win it.” D’Corey definitely looked the part, as he was dressed to impress with a gray suit and a glossy green bowtie. However, it was his performance that really stole the show.
The timeless power ballad “Open Arms” by Journey was the song that D’Corey choose to perform at his audition. The judges were immediately drawn to his deep, mature voice and silky tremolo, which he displayed from the very first notes of his performance. Despite the fact that his professional performance left the crowd in awe, Simon Cowell was not satisfied with it. He challenged him to perform the song once again, but this time without using a backing track.
D’Corey accepted the challenge without any hesitation, and he followed it up with an a cappella performance that left everyone in a state of astonishment. His inherent skill and evident promise were brought to the forefront by the absence of any accompaniment, which allowed his voice to shine even brighter. He was given a standing ovation by Simon, and all four judges joyfully awarded him a unanimous “yes,” which allowed him to advance to the next stage at the competition.
His voyage came to an end before he reached the top three, despite the fact that he made it all the way to the semifinals and gained a berth in the top five competition.
