She first gained international fame in 2016 when a moving picture of her helping a very malnourished child, whom she subsequently called “Hope,” moved millions of people. At the time, his tragic state broke the hearts of people worldwide.

It was destiny, however, that had something really remarkable planned for him. Without hesitation, Anja—the visionary behind Land of Hope, a nonprofit that saves and nurtures abused and neglected children—took action. She welcomed him into her home, bestowed upon him the hopeful name Hope, and, with the support of her staff, guided him through his rehabilitation.
Many kids have been rescued from certain loss by Anja, and she has no plans to stop.
Anja Ringgren Lovén started her amazing adventure in 2012 with a daring move—the creation of a Danish non-governmental organization—with a compelling mission: to bring attention to the risks of superstition in Africa, especially Nigeria.
The next year, she arrived in Nigeria with the intention of making a difference and changed lives. A lifelong commitment, her love for working with kids was more than a purpose. Anja and her husband, David Umem, who is from Nigeria, have created something remarkable together.
They have saved more than a hundred orphans via their non-governmental organization, Land of Hope. However, it was not all! They built Land of Hope in Akwa Ibom, the largest children’s facility in West Africa, with love and devotion, providing a place where these children may recover, thrive, and rediscover what it is to be a child.
Hope, a tiny child who was in real danger of dying, was a day that Anja will never forget.
I was born and brought up in Denmark, one of the wealthiest and safest nations in the world,” Anja said in an interview. Living and working in Nigeria has certainly been an eye-opening adventure.
Being a mother to a Nigerian infant and having lived in Nigeria for over seven years since the birth of David Jr., my first kid with David, in 2014, has really made me a Nigerian. However, I had extensive experience in Africa before my trip to Nigeria as I had worked as a humanitarian worker there for many years. However, there are several issues plaguing Nigeria. And I am quite worried about this.
Hope, a young boy who was abandoned when he was two years old, is just one of the several children whose lives have been entirely changed by Anja and her staff. He was abandoned by his parents, who left him weak, hungry, and sick with parasites. Despite his little stature, he was excommunicated by his own people due to the effects of starvation and disease. He fought for his life for eight months, anticipating what seemed to be his eventual demise.
But he was in for an even bigger surprise from destiny. Hope was discovered in the most tragic state in January 2016 by Anja and her crew, but they were determined not to let his journey stop there. He received immediate medical attention, food, and, most importantly, love, when they stepped in.
After all the young child had gone through, the mom tried her best to show him the positive side of life.
According to Anja, Hope was saved because she and her crew were responding to a report from a villager about a youngster who needed to be rescued. We decided to have a look at the case by driving to the village.
We had rescued over 50 children in a similar dire situation before we ever rescued Hope, so we were prepared. Hope was abandoned on the street since his parents were not in the village. What follows is a chronicle of our journey to the hospital to treat Hope. As a young man now, he is robust and healthy, and he loves his time at Land of Hope, both academically and socially.
Almost nine years have passed since I rescued Hope,” Anja stated in an Instagram post from 2024. “Love heals” and “time flies.”
Now that he’s an adult, the youngster is doing well, thanks to his supportive family and friends.
“Hope was born January 2013, making him 10 years old today,” Anja said in another post about how Hope was rescued. Everyone on Earth heard about his rescue, and he ended up representing our cause.
“The growth of hope is very potent. My discovery came at the conclusion of his life. His corpse had long since perished. However, love and perseverance ultimately triumphed. The pupils at Hope’s school had a cultural day yesterday to commemorate the conclusion of the school year.
“Hope was wearing agbada, worn widely in Nigeria but more by the Yoruba tribe and around almost all part of West Africa.”

From their initial meeting all the way up to the current day, Hope was shown in the movie, and she demonstrated how he was recovering physically and spiritually during these years.
