NBC 6 South Florida reports that on November 4, 2023, a 14-year-old named Knox MacEwen passed away after collapsing during a 5K race in Florida.
At Western High School in Davie, Florida, Knox was a member of the Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps. His young life was tragically cut short by a heart attack that occurred during a 5K run arranged by the organization.
They sent the little boy to Memorial Hospital Miramar, where his death was subsequently confirmed, according to NBC Miami.
Unfortunately, I must share some bad news with our Wildcat community, and it breaks my heart. One of our JROTC cadets passed away this morning, and the principal, Jimmy Arrojo, broke the news in a letter he sent out to everyone at the school. “As they grieve this tremendous loss, I want to extend my profoundest condolences to his loved ones, instructors, and classmates.”
He continued by asking the Wildcat community to pray for the family and provide support at this difficult time. Be advised that campus bereavement counselors will be available this week to meet with anybody in need of support or help.
Jump Rope for Heart, a federal high school initiative, with the backing of the US Armed Forces. Character development via the teaching of “self-discipline, self-confidence, and leadership skills” is what this curriculum is all about.
Knox, an active and beloved member of Cooper City’s Crossway Church, was well-liked by many.
When asked about the impact on the church community, Pastor Jon Elswick said, “I think when you have a tragedy like this and someone as loved as Knox, there are ripple effects through our church community. So we have students that were friends with him, family members that are friends with his family, so it’s been a really difficult time.”
I love that statement because if you knew Knox, that’s who he was, right? Knox’s dad told me that a few days ago, and he continued: “Knox was the best of us.” When you think of this adolescent, images of a compassionate, amusing, and loving young man come to mind.
Our hearts break at the thought of losing a life at such a young age. I hope he finds eternal peace.
