Greta Gerwig, who also co-wrote the screenplay with filmmaker Noah Baumbach, is the film’s director. “Barbie” is a fantasy comedy. The film, which is based on Mattel’s Barbie fashion dolls, is the first live-action rendition of Barbie after previous animated adaptations of the character.
It was on July 21, 2023 that the first showing of “Barbie” was held in theaters all across the globe. The film was an immediate success and is now regarded as a valuable piece of pop culture. People who went into the film thinking it would be nothing more than a lighthearted comedy about a well-known doll were surprised to find out that the movie was really very relatable and had a number of touching moments.

After Barbie goes through an existential crisis, the plot of the show “Barbie” follows Barbie and Ken as they go on a quest to find themselves. The movie is nothing at all like any of the other CGI animated versions that were previously made available. It is progressive in that it portrays a matriarchal society in which all women are successful, self-confident, and self-sufficient. In contrast to their male counterparts, who spend the majority of their time participating in various forms of leisure, the Barbies continue to maintain essential employment roles. In the Barbie universe, they are decision-makers, comparable to professions like as attorneys, legislators, and physicians.
The movie has a star-studded ensemble, with Margot Robbie playing Barbie and Ryan Gosling playing Ken, among other notable actors. Other actors who had roles in the film include America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, Ariana Greenblatt, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, and Will Ferrell. Helen Mirren also makes an appearance in the film.
Notably, McKinnon portrayed “Weird Barbie,” who is possibly one of the most sympathetic characters in the film. “Weird Barbie” is a fantastic portrayal of all of the Barbies that were played with a bit “too much” by their owners. On August 4, 2023, Mattel made the announcement that McKinnon’s rendition of the Barbie figure will at long last be manufactured as a toy and made available for purchase.
The idea to stage a live version of the movie has been kicking about in people’s heads for years. Universal Pictures made the announcement that took place in September of 2009, naming Laurence Mark as the producer. However, as time went on, a number of adjustments were made, including alterations to the cast, the writing staff, and even the production crew. After Warner Bros. Pictures acquired the rights to the picture in October 2018, production on the movie got off the ground. In 2019, it was revealed that Robbie will play Barbie, and in 2021, it was revealed that Gerwig would direct and co-write the film with Baumbach. In the year 2022, the remaining members of the cast were revealed, and production began in a total of three different locales.
According to CNN, as of August 6, 2023, and only three weeks into its amazing run globally, “Barbie” has achieved the billion-dollar box-office mark, making Gerwig the first solo female filmmaker to have been a member of the Billion Dollar Club. This accomplishment also makes Gerwig the first solo female director to have been a member of the Billion Dollar Club.
The genuine relatability of the characters and the representation that it offered for a large number of people all around the globe were both contributing factors to that success. In the same way that there are many different versions of “Barbie” in the real world, the movie did an excellent job of showcasing their variety. Other supporting characters were Weird Barbie, Supreme Court Justice Barbie, Journalist Barbie, Doctor Barbie, Diplomat Barbie, Pulitzer Prize-Winning Author Barbie, President Barbie, Journalist Barbie, Physicist Barbie, and Supreme Court Justice Barbie.
Comedienne Kate McKinnon of “Saturday Night Live” portrayed the character “Weird Barbie.” In an interview with Extra, she described “Weird Barbie” as a Barbie whose owners “cut the hair, burned the clothes, and drew marker on the face.” She also said that she has been “cast out by society” and that she has such a “birds-eye view” of the whole Barbieland.
In the film, McKinnon’s Barbie assisted Robbie’s Stereotypical Barbie travel to the real world, where she met Ferrera’s Gloria and discovered that the world was not what they imagined it would be for women. McKinnon’s Barbie also helped Robbie’s Barbie learn that the world was not what she thought it would be for women. Following subsequent events in the movie—which we won’t disclose for anybody who hasn’t watched the movie yet—”Weird Barbie” also became an important part of the effort to save Barbieland.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, filmmaker Greta Gerwig discussed the making of the film “Weird Barbie,” and she discussed where the idea for the film came from.

“When I was growing up, we moved to a new area that had a large number of females who were older than me. She went on to say, “As a result, I had a number of hand-me-down Barbies that, by the time I got them, had already been given a new hairstyle.” “It was like, ‘Well, we have to do that,'” she said. Through that Barbie, I had the impression that I could practically make a spiritual connection to the realm of pretend play. Remember that novel by Lois Lowry called “The Giver,” where the main character is a person who has all of the colors, sensations, and other things? In a sense, it sums up my feelings on the character of Kate. She would be in the position of the provider since it would seem that she had information that the others did not.
On August 4, 2023, Mattel made the long-awaited announcement that “Weird Barbie” will be offered from that point on. This was just a few days before the cultural phenomenon known as “Barbie” crossed the one billion dollar mark at the movie office.
Mattel made the announcement in the form of an Instagram post, stating that it is “time to get weird.”
“Inspired by her appearance in @BarbieTheMovie, Weird #Barbie understands what it’s like to play just a liiiiittle too much! Mattel Creations is the only place to pre-order your official movie doll before the August 18th deadline. #BarbieTheMovie is now showing in cinemas,” the company added in the post.
In contrast to the real-life Weird Barbies that have been circulating on TikTok, Mattel’s new “Weird Barbie” has been preserved and is designed to appear extremely similarly to McKinnon’s role in the film.
