Simone Biles shared a story on Instagram on Tuesday, July 30, after her historic triumph at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. The tale included Ronald Biles, who was there to see her compete.
“My dad and his binoculars are so freaking cute,” Simone says of her biological grandpa, who, together with his wife, adopted the eight-time Olympic champion after leaving her in foster care when she was three years old. Simone’s biological grandfather is also the one who sponsored her adoption.
During her interview, Simone, the most decorated gymnast in the history of the United States, disclosed information about her childhood, including the fact that her biological mother, who was “struggling with drug and alcohol abuse,” starved her and her siblings. A foster home was where Simone Biles, who is now 26 years old, and her three siblings, Adria, Tevin, and Ashley, were living.
On account of her addiction to both alcohol and drugs, Shanon, who is Simone’s biological mother, was unable to provide enough care for her four children.
“It was difficult to give up my children, but I had to do what I had to because I couldn’t care for them,” Shanon said in an interview with the Daily Mail. She also said that the children’s father, who is also an addict, was gone.
Simone gave an honest interview to CNN in which she discussed her early memories and the “difficulties” she had with her mother, who was an addict.
When my siblings and I were placed in foster care, our biological mother was struggling with substance abuse and alcoholism. CNN reported that woman said, “I was three years old.”
She has a clear recollection of hunger even after twenty years have passed.
She remembers a cat who fed us when we were youngsters but did not share our fondness. She does this throughout the film. She also recalls our hunger when we were children. Because of our good fortune, we were allowed to reside in the same foster home together. This was without a doubt one of the most happy days of my life. It was only that we were so delighted.
The fact that her grandparents, Ronald and Nellie Biles, who adopted Simone when she was six years old, and her younger sister, Adria, who is now 24 years old, made frequent visits contributed to the excitement that was already there.
During the course of her Facebook Watch series titled “Simone vs. Herself,” Simone shared her explanation, “I wanted to take care of Adria because she was the baby.” I just had the feeling that I needed to watch out for her, because if your family doesn’t look out for you, then who else is going to take your place?
Tevin and Ashley were raised in Cleveland, Ohio, by Ronald’s sister, who made the decision to adopt them.
“I never, ever thought about gymnastics as a sport to put Simone in; that never entered my mind,” says Nellie, her adopted daughter, in the book Simone Against Herself. “So I never even considered the possibility.” In my memory, there was a field trip that they were supposed to go on, but the weather stopped them from traveling to the farm or any other place that they had planned. Instead, they went to Bannon’s gymnastics.
Simone substantiates the recollections of her mother and shares with her followers that she was introduced to gymnastics for the first time when she was attending “daycare on a school trip.”
“I never remember seeing pictures of it in a magazine or watching it on television,” the athlete says, adding that she learnt it by “imitating” other women before she became successful.
After then, Nellie and Ronald have been there at each and every gathering, where they have seen Simone completely dominate the competition.
It was noted by Simone that she has a “bad habit” of seeking for her biggest supporters in the crowd, and that she would be “kind of nervous” if she were to compete without the presence of her parents.
It is not until I am aware of their whereabouts among the throng that I am able to feel at ease and safe. When I watch them in the arena, it helps me to relax and not feel as worried as I normally would.
To my parents, I would want to express my thanks for the sacrifices they have made from the very beginning in order to make it possible for me to follow my aspirations. However, the most important thing I want to say is that I am grateful to you for being there for me through all of my highs and lows. To put it simply, you are the very best.
The only competition that the Biles duo did not participate in was the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, which were closed to spectators owing to the provisions of COVID-19. Eventually, Simone decided to prioritize her health and withdraw from the women’s team final as well as the four consecutive individual finals. This decision was made because she was dealing with a case of what gymnasts refer to as the “twisties,” which is a condition in which the body and mind go out of sync.
Dad is in possession of his binoculars.
Simone’s husband, Jonathan Owens, a football player who took time off from training camp with the Chicago Bears to support his wife, joined Ronald and Nellie in cheering on Simone and Team USA in the 2024 Olympics in Paris. The Olympics will be held in Paris.
In a video posted on Facebook, Nellie expresses her happiness by saying, “It does not matter where we are or what competition we are in; she knows where we sit.” “I know that she can hear me because I scream so loudly,” she adds. “She can hear me.”
While Simone was searching the Bercy Arena in Paris for her parents, she saw Owens seated next to Nellie, who was smiling brightly, and her father, whose face was concealed by binoculars used to observe his daughter. Owens was wearing a colorful t-shirt that included images of his wife.
CNN was informed by a fervent fan of the organization that “it gives them love and support, which is what these kids need, so having that one constant means the world to them.”
