South African actress and filmmaker Connie Chiume passed away on August 6 in Johannesburg. She was well acclaimed for her work.
Connie Chiume, a critically acclaimed South African actress and director, passed away recently. She was arguably best recognized by fans in the United States for her parts in the films Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Her age was 72.
The revelation was verified by her son, Nongelo, to the South African news program Newzroom Afrika on Wednesday. Nongelo said that Chiume passed away on Tuesday at a hospital in Johannesburg.
“She was admitted for a medical procedure, and she was recovering well,” Chiume’s son shared with the family over the phone. “But, unfortunately, we then got the news of her passing.”
While speaking about his mother, Nongelo expressed his pride in being her children. Not only did she leave a wonderful legacy for her children and her family, but she also left a legacy for the town and the nation as a whole.
Her acting career started in the 1980s, after she had returned to South Africa following spending many years in Greece. The actress was born in Welkom, South Africa, in 1952. She had previously spent several years in Greece.
Due to the fact that she started her acting career at the time when South Africa was still under the rule of apartheid, she was able to participate in the movie boom that occurred following the end of apartheid in the early 1990s. Her career covered two periods that were startlingly different from one another.
In 2018, Chiume played the character of Zawavari, a tribal elder, in Marvel’s Back Panther, which was her most significant job in the Hollywood film industry. As part of the 2022 film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, she played the character once again.
She is also well-known for her many appearances in various entertainment ventures that have been produced in South Africa. Television shows such as Zone 14, Rhythm City, Queen Sono, and Gomora are among the most notable and unforgettable. In addition, she has appeared in a number of significant cinematic roles, including those in the films I Dreamed of Africa, Fanie Fourie’s Lobola, and Seriously Single, among others.
Additionally, she played herself in the upcoming musical film Black Is King, which was directed by Beyonce.
At the South African Film and Television Awards in 2022, Chiume was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his many accomplishments.
She leaves behind three children and five grandkids, all of whom are devoted to the cherished actress.
