The police said that they discovered a girl who was 17 years old and had been missing for two months living with a guy who was 44 years old and that the two of them were engaged after they successfully located the girl.

According to the Kent County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO), Penelope “Penny” Wise was reported missing after she was last seen leaving her family’s house on foot on May 31 at around 6:00 p.m. local time. Penny Wise was last seen departing without a trace.

Wise was spotted on video wandering alone in Rockford about midnight on Saturday, June 1st, before she was discovered. Throughout the inquiry, the police said that they thought she “intentionally walked away from home” and that they did not have any evidence to imply that she was the victim of any kind of criminal activity.

There was an update provided by the authorities on Sunday, July 21, which said that the adolescent had been “located safe.”

According to the police, “the initial investigation revealed that Penny was living with an older man in a home, in the City of Rockford.” They also said that they were able to locate her because a member of the neighborhood observed Wife leave the home on a bicycle and subsequently notified the police.

In an update that was released on Monday, July 22, the police said that they had discovered that the “older man” was 44 years old. They also disclosed that the two individuals, who had not known each other before, had met at around 2:00 a.m. local time on June 1, only a few hours after Wise had been last seen.

After that, they went on to add that the couple started living together on the same day, and that detectives “also learned that Penny and the man were engaged.”

Under Michigan law, the age of consent is sixteen.

During an interview with the local ABC station WZZM, the police said that Wise left her house because of a “disagreement” with her parents. They also stated that they think she was living with the guy voluntarily, and that they met by “happenstance.”

There was never any link between them. According to the Undersheriff of Kent County, Brian Muir, there was no digital trail that we could have followed that would have led us to this place. They just occurred to cross paths and form a connection with one another.

People received confirmation from the Kent County Prosecutor’s Office on Tuesday, July 23, that the office “has decided not to pursue charges against the 44-year-old man at this time.”

Chris Becker, the prosecutor for Kent County, said to WXMI, a FOX station, that their agency “can’t just charge things that we find troubling,” despite the fact that the case was “clearly troubling.”

The publication said that the prospective charges that they investigated included sheltering a fugitive and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile. However, due to the fact that Wise was only 16 years old, such accusations were not applicable.

“We are required to adhere to the law, and that is exactly what we did,” he said. “Simply put, we were left without anything to charge,” she said.

During an interview with WZZM on July 22, Muir said that the adolescent was still being held in prison, but that they “really can’t get into what she’s in custody for, because she is a juvenile still in the eyes of the law.”

Muir concluded by saying, “We’re just trying to connect her with services before she makes it back home.”

On Wednesday, July 24, when PEOPLE reached out to Wise’s mother for comment, she said that the family is “happy” that their daughter was recovered, but that they are “saddened by the choices she made.”

In addition, she said that she was still being held in a juvenile detention facility, and that they had not yet had the opportunity to see her. “We are thankful for all the law enforcement officers and the hours that they put in searching for our daughter,” she said.
