After 60 years together, Bob and Ginnie Newhart passed away a year apart.

Bob, who passed away aged 94 on July 18, met Ginnie in 1962 via their mutual friend, actor Buddy Hackett. They married a year later.

“Buddy said, ‘I’ve got a girl for you,'” Bob told PEOPLE in 2019. I’m going to set you up on a blind date since she’s dating another man who’s not suited for her. After meeting her, you’ll date and marry. Then you’ll have kids and call one Buddy. Which we did.”

Bob and Ginnie, who passed away aged 82 in April 2023, had four children: Robert, born in November 1963, Timothy, born in 1967, Jennifer, born in 1971, and Courtney, born in 1977. In November 2020, they told PEOPLE that one of their children was called “Buddy” to fulfill their Hackett pledge.

The Bob Newhart Show alum explained their connection by saying they had similar upbringings and backgrounds.

“We’re Catholic. Her Irish heritage is 75%. Three-quarters Irish, Newhart said.

He said Ginnie was his greatest support, assisting him with his concerts and pushing him to experiment.

“The dressing room would have her. Something’s amiss with the sound system, she’d say. Nothing was audible,” he recalls. I responded, ‘Honey, the sound system was fine. They didn’t laugh!”

They laughed a lot and credited humor with keeping their relationship intact.

“The marriages of comedians, no matter how stormy, seem to last a long time, and I attribute it to laughter,” Bob told Parade in 2022. “No matter how heated the disagreement, you can find a line and chuckle together. You know it’s over? I believe comedy helps marriages last.”

Ginnie and the Emmy winner celebrated 60 years of marriage in January 2023. Bob celebrated by sharing the couple’s “favorite photos” on social media.

Ginnie passed away three months after the milestone occasion after a protracted illness.

Bob said on X (formerly Twitter) that “We lost our beloved Ginnie Quinn Newhart – Wife, Mother and Grandmother on April 23rd, 2023 after a long battle with illness.” “She was our rock and we miss her.”

A 2020 CBS Sunday Morning interview questioned the Elf actor why he was performing during the epidemic. He said he felt sure in where he would go if something occurred, so he could keep spreading laughter.

“I believe that when it’s over and you go to heaven, God asks, ‘What did you do?'” When I remark, ‘I made people laugh,’ he says, ‘Yeah, get in that nice short line over there,’ “joking.
