Streaming services will soon be able to access the narrative of the world’s first Black Barbie.

“Black Barbie” is a documentary that will take an in-depth look at the idea, motivation, and individuals behind the production of the first Black Barbie doll, which was launched in shops in 1980. The trailer for the documentary was published by Netflix on Tuesday, and it offered a preview of the documentary.

“I designed Black Barbie to reflect the total look of a Black woman,” stated one of the women featured in the teaser while describing her creation.

The significance of a “Black Barbie” conception is brought to light in the introduction video. The teaser has a little girl of African descent interacting with a Barbie doll of the same race, describing the doll as “really pretty.” This serves to emphasize the primary topic of the film. Even though she was clutching her own hair, she said, “It has locks, just like me.”

The doll is more than simply a toy. According to a description that was connected to the teaser on Netflix, “Black Barbie celebrates the momentous impact that three Black women at Mattel had on the evolution of the Barbie brand as we know it.”

“Through these charismatic insiders’ stories, the documentary tells the story of how the first Black Barbie came to be in 1980, examining the importance of representation and how dolls can be crucial to the formation of identity and imagination,” according to the accompanying description.

The release date for “Black Barbie” on Netflix is June 19th.
