In connection with an allegation that she made to investigators in the aftermath of the loss of her roommate Meredith Kercher in 2007, Amanda Knox, whose own legal story has stretched almost two decades, was once again found guilty of slander.
Knox fought for years to clear her reputation after she and her ex-boyfriend Raffaelle Sollecito were wrongfully convicted of the murder of Kercher. In 2015, Italy’s highest court pronounced them innocent of the charges against them. However, she continues to be convicted of defamation.
Together with her husband Christopher Robinson, Knox made an appearance in court in Florence, Italy. There, an appeals panel once again ruled her guilty of slandering her former employer Patrick Lumumba, whom she temporarily accused of murder, according to reports from the Associated Press, the BBC, and CNN.
What led to Amanda Knox’s conviction for an act of slander?
In November of 2007, Kercher was killed in the city of Perugia, Italy, in an apartment that she lived with Knox, who was twenty years old at the time and was studying abroad in the nation. After then, Knox and Sollecito developed became the focus of the investigation being conducted by the police.
According to the Associated Press, Knox was detained by the police for a total of 53 hours for interrogation, despite the fact that she could not speak Italian well.

In the course of the hard round of questioning, Knox signed affidavits claiming that Lumumba, the proprietor of a pub who was not involved in the murder, was the person responsible for the loss of Kercher. In a message that was penned the next day, Knox refuted the claim; nonetheless, Lumumba was brought into arrest, as reported by the Associated Press.
Knox was found guilty of murder in 2007, and she was sentenced to four years in jail until her conviction was reversed for the first time in 2011. Knox, however, was found guilty of slandering Lumumba in 2009 and was sentenced to three years in prison for his actions.
After the European Court of Human Rights determined in 2023 that Knox’s questioning breached her rights, Italy’s top court ordered a retrial on the slander conviction, which resulted in another conviction on June 5, 2024. The retrial was related to the accusations that Knox had made against her.
Will it be necessary for Knox to return to prison?
Despite the fact that Knox’s original three-year jail term for defamation was upheld by her subsequent conviction, she will not be required to spend any further time behind bars since she had already spent four years during her initial imprisonment, as reported by CNN.
On the other hand, the verdict indicates that Knox’s legal battle has not yet reached its conclusion.

The legal team representing Knox will have sixty days to submit an appeal based on the explanation that was provided by the court after the judge has filed the reasoning for the judgment, as reported by CNN.
