Recently, Jay was given the authority to act as conservator of the joint estate that he and his wife, Mavis, jointly own.

On Tuesday evening, Jay Leno and his wife, Mavis Leno, were both beaming with happiness as they attended the premiere of Unfrosted in Los Angeles.

Just a few weeks after the comedian, who is 74 years old, was granted conservatorship of the joint estate he shares with Mavis, who is 77 years old, in the midst of her battle with dementia, the couple attended the red carpet event in support of Jerry Seinfeld’s new Netflix film, which will be released on the streaming platform on May 3, and shared an update on how they are doing these days.

Mavis told Kevin Frazier of ET, “I feel great,” as she waited for her husband of 44 years to attend the interview. “I am very blessed,” she said.

Jay was leaning on the philanthropist as he discussed the reasoning for their decision to host a date night at the premiere of Unfrosted. The benefactor smiling and laughing.

The former host of a late-night show teased, “Thought I’d come to something fun for a change,” and then laughed. “Everything is so contentious,” she observed. Just to come to a movie that is hilarious and ridiculous — it’s fantastic. “I believe that everyone will have a wonderful time.”

When it comes to their love that will last forever, Jay believes that the secret is to be with his closest friend and to spend as much time as they can together.

He answered, “Well, we hang out every day,” referring to the strong friendship that they have. We are having a wonderful time. 44 years of marriage, so things are going well for us.

In the months that have passed since Jay submitted his petition for conservatorship of their joint estate in January, their love has only grown stronger during these last several months. It was at that time that he made a request to a court in Los Angeles to grant him his bid so that he could “structure her living trust and other estate plans” in the event that he passed away before she did.

The estate conservatorship, which is a different sort of petition than one that would provide him power over her body and health, was essential as her condition continued to quickly decrease, according to documents that were acquired by ET from the court system. Jay and his attorneys claimed that the conservatorship was necessary.

“Mavis has been progressively losing capacity and orientation to space and time for several years,” according to a particular document. “Jay is fully capable of continuing support for Mavis’ physical and financial needs, as he has throughout their marriage,” but it seems that her “current condition renders her incapable of executing the estate plan.”

ET was able to receive papers connected to Jay’s conservatorship petition one month after the first news broke. In these documents, Ronald Ostrin, Mavis’ court-appointed legal counsel, asked the court to accept the bid. In the document, Ostrin said that he had investigated Mavis’ advanced form of dementia and had spoken with medical professionals who described the circumstances surrounding the severity of her illness at the time.

Mavis’s neurologist, Dr. Hart Cohen, indicated in a letter that she “sometimes does not know her husband, Jay, nor her date of birth.” This was written by the legal counsel who was assigned by the court to represent Mavis. As stated by Dr. Cohen, Mavis often has “a great deal of disorientation” and “ruminates about her parents, both of whom have passed away, as well as her mother, who passed away approximately twenty years ago.”

To add insult to injury, Dr. Cohen, a neurologist at Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles, shared with Ostrin that Jay “loves his wife very much” and “treats [Mavis] like gold.” In addition to this, he said that the former host of the Tonight Show had delayed to initiate the conservatorship of the estate “out of respect to her.”

The conservatorship was ultimately given to Jay and Ostrin by Judge Brenda Penny, who was also the judge who presided over the dispute over Brittney Spears’ inheritance. This decision was made at the beginning of April. During the hearing that took place at the time, Ostrin expressed his belief that Mavis’s husband would be responsible for her care in accordance with the order.

She has a lot of good fortune. Having experienced having a mother with dementia myself, I can attest to the fact that Mrs. Leno is now living in the least restricted setting possible and is receiving excellent care. Ostrin said that they have a solid strategy with a plan of action.

Penny agreed, and she expressed her gratitude to Jay, who was there via Zoom, by saying, “I know this is a difficult time when this needs to happen, and I thank you.”

The courteous response that Jay gave was, “Thank you, your honor.”

In the weeks that have passed since the previous update, the pair has remained out of the public spotlight. They have even avoided any significant birthday parties for the Emmy Award winner, who turned 74 on April 28. In an interview with ET during the premiere of Unfrosted, Jay and Mavis, who do not have any children, said that they are not particularly fond of celebrating birthdays.

In her words, “We just have each other,” Mavis stated.

“My life is a party anyway,” her spouse continued to say more. “Every day is a good day.”

This party has been going on since the middle of the 1970s, when they first began dating each other. As part of an interview with Entertainment Tonight (ET) that took place in 2014 at an event hosted by the Television Academy Hall of Fame, Jay testified to the strength of his decades-long marriage by stating that after 34 years, he had no regrets.

“I would do exactly the same thing, I would marry the same person,” he said in response. “I’d do everything the same exactly.”
