This tribute was given by Sinéad O’Connor’s daughter to her late mother.
During a memorial event held on Wednesday at Carnegie Hall in New York City for the late Irish heroes Shane MacGowan and O’Connor, Roisin Waters performed a rendition of the famous song “Nothing Compares 2 U.” These musicians and activists were both deceased.
Waters, who is 28 years old, can be seen strolling barefoot in a beautiful flowery slip dress while singing a passionate version of O’Connor’s classic from 1990 in video that was taken by fans during the performance. Near the conclusion of the act, the audience applauds her in unison, and it seems as if concertgoers are giving her a standing ovation.
The evening was packed with musicians who paid respect to both of the performers who had passed away. Bettye LaVette sang a copy of O’Connor’s song “I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got,” while Cat Power performed a cover of The Pogues’ song “The Body of an American.” The song “Thank You for Hearing Me” by O’Connor was given a new interpretation by the Resistance Revival Chorus. The duet “Haunted” by MacGowan and O’Connor was performed by Glen Hansard and Imelda May throughout the evening.
Billy Bragg, Gordon Gano of the Violent Femmes, Dropkick Murphys, Eugene Hutz of Gogol Bordello, Craig Finn of The Hold Steady, and John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats are some of the other musicians who have recorded songs by MacGowan and his band, The Pogues.
