Jake Gyllenhaal had a severe illness during the filming of his most recent film, Road House.

During an episode of Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast, Gyllenhaal, aged 43, said that he had a severe hand injury during a fight scene, leading to the development of a staph infection.

According to Gyllenhaal, the stunts shown in the film include engaging in physical altercations on the floor, behind tables, and even in front of glass.

In reminiscing about an incident during the production of a scene set in a bar, the actor recounted the process of placing his palm on the bar and then placing it onto a straight glass surface.

The individual expressed a sensation of the glass being grasped in their hand. “I recall the sensation and exclaimed, ‘That is a substantial amount of glass.'”

The film, being a replica of the 1980s action cult hit with Patrick Swayze, had several combat sequences and stunts. Consequently, the actors often encountered such situations, including instances of staph infections. Staphylococcus aureus, a condition caused by the interaction of bacteria with open wounds, may lead to the development of skin rashes and swelling. If left untreated, it can be life-threatening, as stated by the Mayo Clinic.

Despite the severity of the cut on Gyllenhaal’s hand, he remained uncertain about the specific scrape or bruise that was responsible for his illness.

“I believed it originated from, recall that particular scene in which you arrived with a wooden object?” he said, inquiring about one of the several combat sequences between the professional boxer and himself. I firmly grasped your arm and contemplated the possibility of sustaining an injury. However, my whole arm became swollen. It ultimately turned out to be staph.

With gratitude, I made a concerted effort to attend to all our activities and maintain my physical well-being throughout the process. He said that he did not have any significant injuries, which served as evidence of the effectiveness of the team he was collaborating with.

The film features Gyllenhaal in the role of a former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) fighter who transitions into a bar bouncer position at a roadhouse in the Florida Keys after concluding his military service. The cast of the movie includes McGregor, Jessica Williams, Post Malone, and Daniela Melchior.

Gyllenhaal has openly acknowledged the diligent effort and meticulous preparation required for an action film such as Road House. On March 8, he addressed South by Southwest (SXSW) on the collective effort it took for him to physically prepare for his portrayal of Elwood Dalton.

I would want to inform you that a decade ago, I produced Southpaw, a film centered on combat, and I found myself in a distinct position. My physique was… Gyllenhaal expressed her awareness of the need for assistance in the areas of nutrition, injury prevention, and the overall visual appeal associated with the part.

He also said that maintaining equilibrium needed the continuous assistance of a collective of individuals.

The actor from the film Brokeback Mountain attributed his physical transformation to the exceptional training of his trainer Jason Walsh, the exceptional culinary skills of his chef Paulette Tejeda, and the guidance of a nutritionist.

Gyllenhaal said that he had a remarkable team of individuals consistently providing him with sustenance, ensuring its availability, and maintaining adaptability.
