The actor, who had previously been nominated for her work on the show ‘Dead to Me,’ shed tears as she took the stage of the performance.
After approaching the stage at the 2023 Emmy Awards and earning a standing ovation, Christina Applegate broke down in tears.
The actress from Dead to Me was the first presenter at the 75th annual event, which took place on Monday. She was overtaken with emotion as the audience cheered loudly for her as the theme music from Married with Children played over her entrance.
Applegate, who started her career in the entertainment business when she was a toddler, walked out of the room when she was fighting multiple sclerosis with the use of a cane. She thanked the audience and then used her typical cutting humor to warn the audience to be quiet so that they could continue with their schedule.
“Oh my gosh, thanks so much for everything. By rising up, you are completely humiliating me because I have a handicap, and that is perfectly OK,” she remarked, which caused the crowd to break out laughing. “Body not by Ozempic.”

She made her debut appearance on the virtual broadcast in the year 2020, which is when the actress made her first appearance at the Emmys. In 2019, she was the final person to physically attend the event. On Monday, however, Applegate made his first public appearance since he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2021.
It is a night that Applegate did not anticipate having, since she had previously projected that she would not go to another awards presentation in her capacity as an actress.
In reference to the 2023 Screen Actors Guild Awards, Applegate said to the Los Angeles Times, “It’s probably my last awards show as an actor, so it’s kind of a big deal.” “Right now, I couldn’t imagine getting up at 5:00 a.m. and spending 12 to 14 hours on a set; I don’t have that in me at this moment.”
That awards presentation took place not long after that, and Applegate appeared at it wearing a long velvet gown that was reminiscent of a tuxedo. She accompanied her look with a black-and-white cane that had the hashtag “FU MS” printed at the foot of it.
When Applegate was asked about the impact that multiple sclerosis has had on her life and work, she said in an interview with Vanity Fair that “It f**king sucks.” This was back in May.
Since multiple sclerosis is an illness, there is never a good day. She told me, “You just have little s**tty days right now.” “… There are just certain things that people take for granted in their lives that I took for granted.”
What she had to say about her professional life was, “I can’t even imagine going to set right now.” This is an illness that worsens with time. I have no idea if my condition is going to get worse. I am able to perform voiceover work because I am required to provide for my family and allow my brain to continue to function.
