Since James Gunn and Peter Safran took control of DC Studios, the first film that will be made by the company is going to be titled “Superman: Legacy.”

The role of Lex Luthor in Superman: Legacy has been identified and confirmed. James Gunn, the director of the film, announced on Monday that actor Nicholas Hoult has been chosen to play the role of the legendary supervillain.

The news was announced by Gunn on his Instagram page, where he also made a promise to his fans that Hoult would depict a “Lex that will be different from anything you’ve seen before and will never forget.”

“Yes, finally I can answer, @nicholashoult is Lex Luthor in #SupermanLegacy and I couldn’t be happier,” Gunn captioned a picture of himself and Hoult together. “I couldn’t be happier at this moment.” “We went out to dinner last night to celebrate and discuss how we can create a Lex that will be different from anything you’ve seen before and will never forget.”

When the rumors started going around, Gunn noted that he was unable to make the announcement since the casting had not yet been conclusively decided upon. “Although we were discussing it, it wasn’t final until a couple days ago and I don’t want to tell you all something that isn’t certain,” according to him. “Anyway, here’s to Lex (and Nicholas!), one of my very favorite characters in the DCU. 🙌🧬🔬⚗️”

In the next DC Comics picture, which will be the first under the new DC Studios umbrella with the appointment of Gunn and Peter Safran as co-chairs and co-CEOs, Hoult will be joining previously confirmed co-stars Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Edi Gathegi, David Corenswet, and Rachel Brosnahan. Hoult will also be starring alongside Rachel Brosnahan.

Vanity Fair was the first publication to reveal that Merced would play the role of Hawkgirl, Gathegi will play the role of Mister Terrific, and Fillion will play a Green Lantern. ET has been informed that Warner Bros. has verified the casting announcement.

In addition, Gunn disseminated the information on Twitter, where he elaborated on the specific version of Green Lantern Fillion that would be featured.

Welcome to the cast of Superman: Legacy, which includes:His message included the following: “@NathanFillion as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, @isabelamerced as Hawkgirl, and @iamedigathegi as Mister Terrific.”

The studio made the announcement that Corenswet and Brosnahan will be playing the roles of Clark Kent and Lois Lane, respectively, one month ago.

The movie is going to be written and directed by Gunn, who has said that he is taking inspiration from the All-Star Superman comic that was created by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely. The movie is scheduled to be released in July of 2025. Even though it is not a narrative about Clark’s origins, the film will concentrate on his early years while he was working as a reporter for the Daily Planet and as a burgeoning superhero in Metropolis.

As for Brosnahan, she has just finished her critically acclaimed five-season run as the titular lead of Prime Video’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which earned her an Emmy Award and two Golden Globes. Corenswet is best known for his roles in the Netflix series The Politician, which was created by Ryan Murphy, as well as the horror film Pearl, which was directed by Mia Goth.

The announcement of the lead casting was also verified by Gunn on Twitter, where he said that his stars are “not only both incredible actors, but also wonderful people.”

The casting came about when Henry Cavill made a cameo appearance in the credits of Dwayne Johnson’s debut in the DC Comics universe, Black Adam, in October of last year. Cavill had previously confirmed that he would be returning to portray Superman. However, once Gunn and Safran gained control of DC Studios, Cavill went back to social media to announce that he would not, in fact, be returning to the role of the superhero.

Cavill said at the time, “I will, after all, not be returning as Superman,” and stated this in his letter. As a result of the studio’s request that I make the announcement of my return in October, before they were hired, this news is not the easiest to hear, but that is the way life is. The rotation of guards is something that takes place on a regular basis. Yes, I do respect that.

Gunn, for his part, said that the next DC films, which include The Brave and the Bold, which focuses on the Bat family, a solo Supergirl movie, and a Swamp Thing feature picture directed by James Mangold, are just going in a different way.

“Peter and I have a DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be more over-the-moon about; we’ll be able to share some exciting information about our first projects at the beginning of the new year,” he said at the end of 2017. “Superman is one of the candidates on the ballot…” Due to the fact that our plot will first concentrate on an earlier period in Superman’s existence, Henry Cavill will not be playing the role of Superman in the beginning phases of the production.

“But we just had a great meeting with Henry and we’re big fans and we talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future,” according to Gunn.
