During an interview with ET, Oprah Winfrey discusses the decision to hand up the role of Sofia to Danielle Brooks.
Since her role as Sofia in the epic film The Color Purple, which was released in 1985, Oprah Winfrey has gone a vast distance. The famed television personality and media mogul is currently reveling in the anticipation of the release of the musical version of the drama, on which she works as an executive producer. This is over forty years after the original production of the play.
Winfrey, who is 69 years old, addressed Kevin Frazier of Entertainment Tonight at the premiere of The Color Purple, which took place on Wednesday at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles. During the event, Winfrey reminisced on her journey since she made her first appearance on television as Sofia.
“David Letterman was escorting me across the street, and I remember that it was a really big night,” Winfrey revealed of the film’s major debut over forty years ago. “I remember that it was a really memorable night.” “Tina Turner was there, and Sidney Poitier was there, and, you know, they’re no longer with us, but it was really, really important, and I’ll never forget it.”
Within the drama that Steven Spielberg directed in 1985, Winfrey appeared with Whoopi Goldberg as a leading actress. Celie, a young Black woman who lives in the South during the early to middle 1900s, finds courage in an incredible sisterhood and an unbreakable friendship. The tale, which was made famous by Alice Walker’s book that won the Pulitzer Prize in 1982, follows Celie as she goes through her life.

On Thursday, Winfrey posted a photograph of herself and Steven Spielberg together, along with the caption, “Steven Spielberg directed the original and iconic @thecolorpurple, and now he’s getting footage of the new Purple family at the premiere — a full circle moment.”
Fantasia Barrino plays the role of Celie, Danielle Brooks plays Sofia, Taraji P. Henson plays Shug Avery, Colman Domingo plays Mister, Phylicia Mpasi plays Young Celie, Corey Hawkins plays Harpo, H.E.R. plays Squeak, Louis Gossett Jr. plays Ol’ Mister, David Alan Grier plays Reverend Avery, Tamela J. Mann plays First Lady, Halle Bailey plays Young Nettie, Ciara plays Adult Nettie, Deon Cole plays Alfonso, and Stephen Hill plays Buster. This year’s reimagining of The Color Purple is directed by Blitz Bazawule, and it features a star-studded cast.
In addition to Winfrey, Steven Spielberg and Quincy Jones served as producers. This was a time of complete reconnection for the three individuals, since Spielberg was the director of the film adaption in which Winfrey made her start in the film industry and Jones was the producer.
There have been several cast members who have said in the past that Winfrey regularly visited the set when the shooting was taking place. Winfrey herself has admitted this fact while she was speaking to ET. The fact that I was there all the while and that I was monitoring the everyday meant that I truly saw Shug Avery jumping up and down on the table 88 times, is that correct? As a result, I was full of concern for her. According to the former presenter of a daytime talk show, “I was so worried about, [like], ‘Girl, how are your knees?'”
In addition, Winfrey said, “I am of the opinion that there is something truly divine surrounding The Color Purple.” When Alice Walker wrote this in 1982, when it was first published, it brought something into the world that was profoundly significant, powerful, resilient, and optimistic, and I feel that the message of forgiveness and joy is something that is always required. I believe that there is something unique about this.
In the 1920s, [Sofia] was the dominant power in the world. “I loved playing that character,” Winfrey said, reflecting on the part that won her a nomination for an Academy Award. “Really, not many women had that or had the agency, as we now refer to it, to be able to do that for themselves,” she added. I was able to transform myself as a result of playing that character, and one of the most enjoyable experiences for me was being on set and witnessing Danielle Brooks take on the role and make it her own. Consequently, you should be aware that when you reach the point in your life when you are a woman of a certain age, one of the greatest and most profound pleasures you will have is the satisfaction of being able to pass it on to another person.
