The musician known for the song “Son of a Sinner” has never been shy about discussing his troubled history or his aspirations for the future.

It’s the type of unbelievable come-uppance tale that country music just can’t get enough of telling.

In recent years, the moniker Jelly Roll has become more well-known, but the challenges that he faced are something that virtually everyone can relate to on some level. The native of Tennessee, who had a terrible past and was arrested numerous times as a teenager, found the motivation to improve himself and pursue his aspirations, which ultimately led to his being a famous musician.

Jelly won Male Video of the Year, Male Breakthrough Video of the Year, and Digital-First Performance of the Year at the 2023 CMT Music Awards this year for his breakthrough song “Son of a Sinner.” At the 2023 CMA Awards, which were held on Wednesday, he had five nominations, and he ended up winning the award for New Artist of the Year. In addition, he is a strong contender for several nominations at the upcoming 2024 GRAMMY Awards, the list of which will be revealed on Friday.

“It was the nod of approval I prayed for,” Jelly Roll told ET of his CMA nominations, which are decided by his contemporaries in the country music industry. “It was the nod of approval I prayed for.” “I knew that we were selling tickets, I knew that fans were with us, I knew that we had people that were getting moved by the music, but I wasn’t really sure what Nashville thought of me, you know?”

A look back at the meandering path that lead Jelly Roll from being a juvenile offender to becoming a country music celebrity is shown here.

Jelly Roll, who was born Jason Bradley DeFord in Nashville in 1984, had a troubled childhood that pushed him into a life of crime at a young age and placed him in prison before he was even able to complete his high school education. He was arrested for the first time when he was just 14 years old, and he gave birth to his first kid while he was still incarcerated.

“A guard knocks on my cell door midafternoon during lockdown,” Jelly remembered in an interview with Billboard earlier this year. He says something to the effect of, ‘You had a child today.’ Nothing in my life has ever compelled me in the here and now to realize that I need to alter the course of my behavior in any way. I have to work something out with this right now.

The musician was forced to get some perspective with the birth of his daughter Bailee in 2008, which resulted in him deciding to work toward obtaining his GED in an effort to improve himself.

“I was only in high school for fewer than sixty to seventy days.” I was certain that I was a complete moron. “I thought I had some kind of learning disability,” he remarked, before disclosing that he had no trouble passing the test on the first attempt. “I walked in there and smacked that b**ch out of the park.”

In 2003, he made his debut in the music industry by releasing his first hip-hop album titled The Plain Shmear Tape. At the time, he was mostly interested in rap music. After a series of collaborations, mixtapes, and more incarcerations, Jelly eventually made the transition to rock and country music, which led to his performing at the Grand Old Opry in November 2021.

“I sobbed my eyes out in front of a group of twelve complete strangers. When he reflected back on the time before his fourth performance in April 2023, he said, “I had just signed my record deal, so I didn’t even really know my record label.” “However, this was a significant factor in my decision to sign a record deal because my contract had two conditions. I said something to the effect of, “You have to promise me that you will get me in the local newspaper, and then you have to promise me that you will get me to the Grand Ole Opry.” I had to at least demonstrate that I am who I claim to be, and even if they never bring me back, I will be okay with that outcome. But please make it such that I am the one who gets to do it.

Ballad of the Broken, Jelly’s first album with a big label, sent him to the top of the rock as well as the country charts in 2021; but, it was “Son of a Sinner,” the album’s lone piece that could be considered authentically country, that placed him on the map. The singer was motivated to shift even farther toward a country sound for his follow-up album, Whitsitt Chapel, which was released the following year in 2023. The song was released as a single in March 2022 and reached No. 1 on Billboard’s US Country Airplay chart.

The album has already produced two successful songs on the country charts: “Need a Favor” and “Save Me.” The latter of these contains another famous country star of the time, Lainey Wilson, while the former features “Need a Favor.” Both of these singles were born from the album.

It should not come as a surprise that the pair was the artist with the most nominations for this year’s CMA Awards. Jelly had the most nominations for a male artist, with five, while Wilson received the most nominations overall for the evening with nine.

“Dude, I don’t think I even woke up expecting a nomination, so when they told me I was the most-nominated male, I almost pooped myself,” he joked to ET during rehearsals for the concert at Bridgestone Arena this week. The event is scheduled to take place on Sunday, April 14.

Jelly acknowledged, in all seriousness, that the acknowledgement from his contemporaries in the country music industry was a significant occasion for both him and his career.

“It was the nod of approval I prayed for,” according to him. “I knew that we were selling tickets, I knew that fans were with us, I knew that we had people that were getting moved by the music, but I wasn’t really sure what Nashville thought of me, you know?”

“It makes me want to get emotional,” he said as an additional comment. “My eyes are starting to well up with tears. It was really like, you know, I’m welcome here, and it was very nice. For me, it was like that.

But Jelly’s trip has only just begun, and he’s already racked up some rather famous buddies along the road, including Dwayne Johnson.

“This is not something I made up. The artist shared this information with Entertainment Tonight back in June. “The Rock was listening to Jelly Roll music when Spotify numbers said only 30,000 people were listening to Jelly Roll,” the musician added. “He has in fact been at my side ever since I first started. I won’t get into the details of that tale here, but he claims that the music was there for him just when he needed it to be at a certain point in his life. And to hear it from him was a very cool experience.”

“This is … seven, eight years ago even and we’ve kept in touch,” he said further. “He was the first person to congratulate me on my Grand Ole Opry debut; first person to congratulate [me], and when I played at the Ryman [Auditorium],” she said. “He was also the first person to congratulate me when I played at the Ryman [Auditorium].” The very first direct message I received after announcing the historic Bridgestone Arena performance in 2022. I’m referring to these high points in my professional life. He is always the first person to whom I address my mails.

The improvement of the singer’s personal life is accompanied by the singer’s growing popularity in his professional life. Today, Jelly has full custody of Bailee, and he and his wife, Bunnie, whom he married in 2016, are bringing up their daughter together. In the same year, he became a father for the second time to an ex-girlfriend and they welcomed their son Noah into the world.

Jelly thanked Bunnie for assisting him in obtaining custody of Bailee, referring to her as “a beacon of change in my life” in an interview he gave to Billboard.

“You’re talking about a woman that came in and took a child that was soon to be born and a child that [we were] soon to have full custody of,” he said of his wife, who is a former sex worker and is now a podcast presenter. “You’re talking about a woman that came in and took a child that was soon to be born and a child that [we were] soon to have full custody of.” “Without her, I never would have been able to win custody of my daughter.” I wouldn’t have the same level of security or the same amount of money.

Jelly also disclosed the shocking first spend he made after striking it big monetarily, which was treatment for both himself and his daughter. He made this revelation when speaking about his new riches.

When she was born, her father was serving time in prison. Her mother ultimately became addicted to heroin and vanished,” the man went on to say. “I’m witnessing the cycle go on as it always has. Because I’m still experiencing everything as it happens, it’s not hard for me to find new ideas to include into my music because of that.

As he continues to improve himself, there are a growing number of individuals in the music business who are interested in collaborating with him. This week at the 2023 CMA Awards, he was reaching out to Post Malone and Zach Bryan, and he remarked that his participation and acknowledgment at the awards presentation highlighted how the doors to the country music market are more open than ever before.

Jelly Roll raved to ET before the awards presentation that “country music is on fire,” describing the current state of the genre. “The range of styles that are considered to be country music as well as the audience for country music are both more expansive than they have ever been. A greater number of individuals than ever before are singing it, and each person’s rendition is unique. Currently, there are more people watching it than there have ever been before. It’s been said that country music is the new pop.

Jelly was still having trouble accepting the accolade that his contemporaries had bestowed upon him, even after he was awarded the title of New Artist of the Year.

“I didn’t think I had a chance, man,” he told ET backstage after the triumph — and after his acceptance speech went viral. “It was wasn’t even in my mind, to be honest.”
