The recently rechristened Brian McKnight is speaking out about his name change.
The 54-year-old musician best known for his hit single “Back at One” revealed on Saturday that he has legally changed his name by posting a photograph of his most recent album on Instagram. The cover art for the album shows an image of the face of the singer’s 9-month-old child.
He stated in the description, “So proud to introduce our son BRIAN KAINOA MAKOA JR.,” which was included in the photo.
“To the world with the publication of my new album, which was carefully crafted for him in love. JR. because I am also pleased to officially announce that I have legally changed my name to perfectly match my legacy’s,” he stated. JR. because I am also glad to reveal that I have legally changed my name to exactly match my heritage.
“My legal name is now BRIAN KAINOA MAKOA MCKNIGHT SR. MCKNIGHTtime LULLABIES the songs of a father to his namesake available now!”
The couple already has a daughter named Julia and a son named Jack; their son is the only child they have together. In addition, McKnight is the father of boys Brian Jr. and Niko with his ex-wife Julie McKnight, to whom he was married from 1990 to 2003. McKnight is also the father of daughter Briana McKnight, who he had with a former partner.
A photo that McKnight and his wife shared on Instagram in January revealed that the couple had just become parents to a second child. “‘We have prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted us the desires of our hearts.'” 27th verse of 1 Samuel “God’s greatest gift, our son is here!!!” the couple said beside a picture of them creating a heart with their hands around the infant’s hand. The photo was posted on the couple’s Instagram account.

The artist expressed their gratitude on their social media at the moment by writing, “So thankful for precious life and our growing OHANA!!!”
The new member of the family is a rainbow baby, an event that McKnight discussed publicly for the first time on Mother’s Day in 2022 via a series of Instagram postings. She said that the pair had previously suffered the loss of a pregnancy.
He said in the caption of a photo that he shared on social media that “I treasure this picture because it was our last family picture before the birth of our son Kekoa Matteo.” The picture showed the couple posing with their other children when Leilani was pregnant.
Leilani was the “greatest example of being a mother I’ve ever witnessed,” and he highlighted that Kekoa’s due date was on Mother’s Day. He went on to say that Leilani was the “greatest example of being a mother I’ve ever witnessed.”
“I know how hard him not being here in the flesh with us is weighing incredibly heavy on us, but I know he is with us just like Julia and Jack are, as shining examples of your exceptional motherhood,” McKnight continued, acknowledging that the “strength I saw in you through the loss of our son and the courage to deal with the hardest loss we’ve ever dealt with in our lives has been truly remarkable.”
