Caine, who is now 90 years old, dropped hints about his impending retirement to The Telegraph last month when he said that he was “sort of retired.” On Saturday, the seasoned actor revealed his retirement from the performing industry during an appearance on the Today programme on BBC Radio 4.
“I keep telling myself that I’m going to retire someday. “Well, I guess I am now,” responded Caine.
His declaration comes on the heels of the premiere of his most recent film, “The Great Escaper,” which took place on October 6th.
Glenda Jackson, who played one of Caine’s co-stars in the film “The Great Escaper,” passed away in June at the age of 87. Caine has said that he intended his cinematic career, which spanned seven decades, to conclude on a high note with “The Great Escaper.”
“I’ve figured, I’ve had a picture where I’ve played the lead and had incredible reviews,” stated Michael Caine. “What am I going to do that will beat this?”
Caine portrays the part of Bernie Jordan, a real-life World War II veteran who breaks out of his care home to attend the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings in France, in the most recent film that he has directed and starred in.
The actor gave the following response when he was asked whether he will return to acting on the BBC Radio 4 show: “No, there will be writing.” Because I had such a good time writing the first book, I want to write another one someday.”
It is not the first time that Caine has said that he is going to retire; back in 2009, the character of “Harry Brown” was advertised as being his last major role. The two-time Oscar winner also revealed in an interview with a British publication published the previous month that he will portray Charles Darwin in a film that will begin production in January.
Caine began his acting career in 1966, when he was cast in the film “Alfie,” which went on to become his most famous part. Caine has been in the industry for more than seven decades. The actor, who is now 90 years old, has received several honors over his career, including two Academy Awards for the films “Hannah and Her Sisters” (1986) and “The Cider House Rules” (1999).
In Christopher Nolan’s “Batman” trilogy, in which he portrayed the part of Alfred Pennyworth, the experienced actor also shone as a supporting actor and excelled in his performance.
