Shakira is rewriting the record books! MTV made the announcement on Monday that the singer, who is 46 years old and will get the award in 2023, would be the winner of its prestigious Video Vanguard Award at this year’s Video Music Awards. She will be the first South American artist to receive this accolade.
Shakira, a four-time winner of the Video Music Awards, will sing at this year’s presentation as well as receive the prize. This will be the first time in 17 years that Shakira has been on an MTV stage. This year, she is contending for four Moon People Awards, including Artist of the Year, Best Collaboration, Best Latin, and Best Latin twice.
“Shakira is a true global force who continues to inspire and influence the masses with her one-of-a-kind musical prowess. She is a force to be reckoned with.” According to Bruce Gillmer, President of Music, Music Talent, Programming & Events at Paramount and Chief Content Officer, Music, Paramount+, she is a pioneer for women all over the globe and one of the first musicians to lead the globalization of Latin music. “She is one of the first artists to lead the globalization of Latin music.” As long as she keeps producing groundbreaking work and thrilling audiences on the greatest level, her huge influence over the whole musical landscape will endure for a very long time.
Beyoncé, Madonna, Jennifer Lopez, and Rihanna are some of the famous musicians that have previously taken home this coveted prize.

This achievement comes on the heels of a banner year for Shakira, during which she made history by being the first female singer in the history of the world to debut in the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 with a Spanish-language tune (“BZRP Music Sessions Vol. 53”) and then again a month later with “TQG.” The accolade comes at a time when Shakira is enjoying a great deal of success.
Shakira, who has been nominated for the Video Music Awards 30 times, just made history by occupying all three of the top slots on the Billboard Latin Pop Airplay Chart. This is an accomplishment that has never been accomplished before in the almost 30-year history of the chart.
On top of all of that, Shakira broke fourteen Guinness World Records earlier this year with the release of “BZRP Music Sessions Vol. 53,” including the most streamed Latin track on Spotify in twenty-four hours, the most viewed Latin track on YouTube in twenty-four hours, the fastest Latin track to reach one hundred million views on YouTube, and the most streamed Latin track on Spotify in one week.
MTV made the announcement earlier this month that Demi Lovato, Karol G, Mneskin, and Stray Kids will be the first wave of worldwide singers scheduled to perform at the 2023 Video Music Awards.
The list of candidates is led by Taylor Swift, who received a total of eight nominations, followed by SZA, who received a total of six nominations. Following closely behind with five nominations apiece are Doja Cat, Kim Petras, Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj, Olivia Rodrigo, and Sam Smith.
