An operation was performed on a man’s neck to remove a tumour the size of a melon. The guy had lived with the growth for over 25 years before deciding to have it removed.
It is estimated that Ian Crown’s tumor was the third biggest of its type anywhere in the world, and the 66-year-old man lived with it for 24 years before having it ultimately removed.
The massive growth of the lump, which now weighs 1.2 kilograms, began in 1992, but Ian claims that it has become “a part of him” and that he has learnt to live with it.

He said, “It started growing in 1992, but after all those years, I’d gotten used to it, it was a part of me that grew with me.” I had finally come to terms with it, but in the end, I couldn’t take it anymore and demanded that it be removed.
“It never hurt, and I was able to sleep just fine, but the summer was the only time it bothered me to any significant degree.” When I reached the age of retirement, though, I realized that it was time for it to depart.
His surgeon, Mr. Ganapathy Dhanasekar, who is an ENT and thyroid specialist at Scunthorpe Hospital, North Lincs., said that “the tumour was what we call a pleomorphic adenoma, which is a benign tumour of the parotid salivary gland.” It was a tumor that grew quite slowly, but its size posed a significant problem for us.

Before undergoing the two-hour procedure to get it removed, Mr. Crow went through a series of scans and had a biopsy test.
Mr. Dhanasekar continued by saying, “It was difficult, but everything went very well, and the scar is healing nicely; however, the fact that the tumor was benign is the most important thing.” He does not need any more therapy at this time, and it was wonderful that we were able to provide this care for him in our own community.
