Mariska Hargitay is a 59-year-old successful actress who rose to fame after landing a recurring role on the long-running drama series “Law & Order.” She is a devoted wife to fellow actor Peter Hermann, 55, and a cherished mother of three children, August Andrew, and Amaya Josephine Hermann. Outside of her professional life, she lives in Los Angeles with her family. Generally speaking, Hargitay maintains a very private approach to her family life and has a strong desire for her children to steer clear of the public eye.
On the other hand, on July 1, a close friend of hers posted two images to Instagram showing her hanging out with Harigtay and a few members of the celebrity’s family at what appeared to be a restaurant. The pictures were posted by the close friend. The first photograph displayed Hargitay and her buddy posing together and smiling for the camera. The second photograph included a sweet cuddling session between actress Mariska Hargitay, her husband, one of her sons named Andrew, and Hargitay’s daughter Amaya, who had just turned 12 years old at the time the photo was taken.
Hargitay did not become a mother for the first time until she was 42 years old. The age at which a woman enters a medical category that indicates a significantly increased likelihood of suffering difficulties during pregnancy. She gave birth to her first child, a son named August, and after a few years, at her son’s request, and as a result of both her and her spouse’s desire to have a large family, discussions about adding another child to the family began. Her son wanted a brother, and both of them wanted a large family.
After reaching the conclusion that adoption was the path they wanted to follow, the couple started talking to adoption agencies about the various possibilities available to them. They were fortunate enough to locate what Hargitay referred to as a “wonderful intuitive adoption lawyer” who assisted them in starting out on their path toward adoption.
The newest member of the family, Andrew, who arrived as a bit of a shock, brought the total number of family members up to five.
The adoption proceedings consisted of a mandatory in-depth visit to the couple’s home that lasted for a whole five hours. The couple had to deal with a number of setbacks throughout the process, which made it difficult for them at times. Hargitay has revealed that
“There were a few instances in which things did not go as planned. A very wide variety of different kinds of difficulties.”
However, after bearing with the many rounds of disappointing visits and patiently waiting for some time, a sliver of optimism finally appeared after what seemed like an eternity. The excited parents learned about a young pregnant woman who was going to give birth to a baby girl, which fulfilled Hargitay’s lifelong goal of one day being able to call herself a mother to a daughter.
It was somewhere about the third time that they had sought to adopt a child and increase the size of their family, so it was only natural that the “Leaving Las Vegas” talent did everything in her could to keep her expectations in check. In spite of this, as soon as she met the mother-to-be, she could not help but be excited. She described the mother as someone who was brilliant, amazing, and intellectual.
After their visit, which was very successful, and after approximately one month of continued communication, when the mother was in labor, she called Hargitay, who was working on the set of “Law & Order: SVU,” and informed her that she needed to report to the hospital as soon as possible. After the birth, the couple was given what was intended to be their bundle of joy, and they had the opportunity to bond with the infant for a total of two days. Before they were notified of the tragic news, the couple even went so far as to name the young girl:
“The biological mother made a last-minute decision. It was nothing less than a catastrophe waiting to happen.”
Tragically, the married couple were forced to give the newborn baby back to her biological mother since they had no other ethical or ethically correct choice. However, their luck changed for the better when their lawyer and social worker told them some wonderful news that made Hargitay cry tears of joy. This turned out to be a fortuitous turn of events for them. They had been successful in locating a woman who was expecting a child and was open to the idea of placing the child for adoption.
Even the administrative staff of the organization could not deny the sensation that this would finally be the time when the expecting couple would be successful in their adoption efforts. The administrative staff praised the new mother as magnificent. When the birth mother, the couple, and Hargitay finally met in person, Hargitay remembers being awestruck by how wonderful the woman was. This came after an outstanding initial phone chat between the birth mother, the couple, and the birth mother.
Even though they were overjoyed at the prospect of having a strong chance of having another child, the couple could not help but feel a little anxious and scared that the same thing that caused their expectations to be dashed would happen again. This was despite the fact that there was a good probability that they would have another child. In spite of this, the biological mother gave Hargitay her word that she was certain the actress would end up being the biological mother of the child.
Despite the fact that the woman was of African-American descent, neither of the persons involved had any concerns regarding the woman’s race. Actually, Hargitay stated the following:
“We were excited to have a multiracial family because that is what the world is, and we want our family to reflect a realistic microcosm of the world,” the authors write. “We want our family to reflect a realistic microcosm of the world.”
In April of 2011, the Hargitay-Hermann family became complete with the addition of a little girl whose name, when translated, means princess, warrior, and night rain. Almost immediately after Amaya was born, Hargitay expressed to People magazine how thrilled she and the rest of her family, including her son August, who was then four and a half years old, felt:
“I have never been happier in my life. She was remarkably aware from the moment she was born, and she was so full of love from the beginning… [August] is overjoyed; he refers to her as his baby since he claims that the entire idea was his, [and] he constantly talks about how he is going to protect her.

During a check-up call to see how Hargitay and her husband were doing with their new baby, their lawyer informed them that there was another baby (this time, a boy) they stood a good chance of adopting if they were interested. If they were interested, the kid had a good chance of being adopted by them.
The couple immediately and unequivocally stated their strong interest in adopting him, and they welcomed newborn Andrew into their home not long after they took in his older sister, Amaya. In a recent in-depth conversation with People magazine, Hargitay discussed the topic of her and her husband’s choice to start a new family and shared her thoughts as follows:
“It is funny, I always get so private about our kids, but I think that the easiest way or the easiest answer is that we just wanted a bigger family, and we feel incredibly blessed,” she said. “It is funny because I always get so private about our kids.”
The perseverance that Hargitay and Hermann demonstrated during the process of adopting a child ultimately paid off, despite the many difficulties they encountered along the way. They are now fortunate to have the opportunity to live a wonderful life with their lovely mixed-race family.
