The Labelle Foundation rescued Strawberry from a shelter when she was a complete mess.
Strawberry’s mother, Kristen Kuhlman, described Strawberry’s condition to The Dodo: “Her body was covered in mange; she was covered in scabs, and her skin was bright red all over her body.” “We’re not sure how she arrived up at the shelter, but it’s obvious that she was mistreated and couldn’t have survived without assistance. After Strawberry had fully recovered, she began her search for a family who would accept her as she was, bump and all. Fortunately, it didn’t take her long to locate the right match.
“I first saw her picture on The Labelle Foundation’s Instagram page,” Kuhlman said. “For her, my heart simply broke. She was physically a complete mess, yet she had the kindest eyes that seemed to be pleading for assistance. She undoubtedly made us feel something. Few months prior, our 15-year-old dog had passed away. Our home felt empty, as did our hearts. I started looking at adoptable puppies online once I realized we wanted to adopt another dog. The moment we met, we knew we wanted to adopt her.
One custom that Strawberry’s foster family initiated that her family knew they wanted to carry on was having Strawberry wear small hats on top of her bump while she got used to life in her new home.
Despite having a significant bump on her head, Strawberry doesn’t appear to be aware of it. She believes that modeling hats is just a fun thing she gets to do and that she is just like any other dog. Everyone who sees her wearing them seemed to appreciate seeing them on her, and she appears to enjoy wearing them. The hats, however, would undoubtedly cause people to pause if they ever made a disparaging remark about her bump.
