Al Pacino, who was given the name Alfredo James Pacino on April 25, 1940, in New York City, spent his whole life in the city where he was born. Pacino remembered his humble beginnings in a feature article for the magazine Interview. He was brought up by his mother, aunt, grandmother, and grandpa. Pacino grew up in the South Bronx.
“I will say that it was difficult for me to grow up,” he told Donnie Brasco’s director Mike Newell at one point. “But in all honesty, my grandma was the one who was in charge. And in second place was my own mother. They were not too old for their age. I was raised by my mother at an early age. To that time in my life, I owe a great deal of gratitude. I owe a great deal to those ladies as well as to my grandpa.
He said that his family “accepted” his acting even if they did not exactly “encourage” it in him.

Pacino started his career on stage before moving on to pursue a career in film. He received training in acting at the Herbert Berghof Studio in New York City before beginning his training there.
Charlie Laughton, who was one of his professors and is seen here with Al Pacino in 1974, would go on to become a lifelong companion and a guiding figure for Pacino during the decades that followed.
According to The New Yorker, their first encounter took place at a club in New York City when Pacino was just 17 years old.

Pacino started his training as an actor with the world-famous Lee Strasberg, and in 1967 he became a member of Strasberg’s Actor’s Studio. After graduating from the studio, Pacino went on to perform in shows in New York and Boston. Pacino made his debut on Broadway in 1969 with the production of Does the Tiger Wear a Necktie?, a performance for which he was later awarded a Tony Award.

Pacino attributes his beginnings in acting to both John Laughton and Lee Strasberg. He said in an interview that he “quit school to go work,” therefore his “education came from the theater.”
“The people who were my mentors, like Charlie Laughton, who is both my best friend and my mentor,” he said. “Charlie is my greatest friend and mentor.” Of course, there’s Martin Bregman and Lee Strasberg,” the speaker said. It’s impossible for me to discuss anything else without bringing up those three individuals.
Pacino appeared in a number of films that Bregman produced, and Bregman also functioned as Pacino’s manager.

In the film The Panic in Needle Park, which was released in 1971, Pacino had his first significant leading role in cinema. In this part, he portrayed a guy who was battling an addiction to heroin.
His major break, however, came in 1972 when he was cast as Michael Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola’s film The Godfather. He played the character for the first time. The performance earned Pacino his first nomination for an Academy Award, this time for Best Actor in a Supporting Role; however, he did not attend the event. In 2022, he explained his absence to The New York Times by saying, “I was somewhat, more or less, rebellious.” He said that his absence was not a form of protest.
When questioned about his meteoric ascent to prominence, he remarked, “I was somewhat uncomfortable being in that situation, being in that world.” During that time, I was also performing in the stage production of Richard III in Boston. However, that was only an excuse. I simply didn’t want to face my fears and go.”
Pacino appeared as Corleone once again in both The Godfather Part II (1974) and The Godfather Part III (1990), all of which starred him.

After his success in The Godfather, Pacino continued to get film parts, one of which was in the 1973 film Serpico, for which he was nominated for an additional Academy Award and won the Golden Globe.
Pacino’s cinematic career was picking up steam while he was still active on the Broadway stage. In 1977, he received his second Tony Award for his portrayal in Basic Training of Pavlo Hummel, which earned him the title of Best Actor in a Play.

In the 1989 film Sea of Love, which also featured Ellen Barkin, he had a starring role as investigator Frank Keller.
He was nominated for an additional Academy Award for his performance as Big Boy Caprice in Warren Beatty’s 1990 film Dick Tracy, which was directed by Beatty.

The play written by David Mamet with the same name as the film that was released in 1992 is known as Glengarry Glen Ross. Pacino performs the part of Richard Roma in the film adaptation of the musical; however, in the Broadway revival of the show in 2012, Pacino took on the role of Shelley Levene.

Pacino would ultimately win his first and only Oscar in 1993 for his role as a blind man in the film Scent of a Woman. In the film, Pacino plays a character who has a life-changing experience in New York City when his niece, who takes care of him, hires a young guy to look after him over the Thanksgiving holiday. His performance earned him the award.

The performance would also earn him a Golden Globe Award for a second time. In the following years, he was awarded the trophy for his performances in the films Angels in America (2004) and You Don’t Know Jack (2011).
Additionally, he was awarded the Cecil B. DeMille Award in 2001, which is a medal that recognizes “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment.” He got this award in the same year.

Pacino was nominated for an Oscar a total of seven times before winning the award for Best Actor.
Pacino made his debut as a filmmaker with the film Looking for Richard, which was released in 1996. The movie is a hybrid of a documentary and an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Richard III, a play in which Pacino had a starring role on Broadway in 1979. Winona Ryder, Alec Baldwin, Kevin Spacey, Kevin Kline, James Earl Jones, and Vanessa Redgrave were among those who appeared in the movie as cast members.

In the 1990s, while Beverly D’Angelo was still married to her ex-husband, she found herself falling in love with Al Pacino. However, that ex pushed her to seek a relationship with Pacino, and after dating for a number of years, she and Pacino became parents to twins in the year 2001. Anton and Olivia Pacino were born to the couple.
D’Angelo told PEOPLE that even though she and Al split up soon after the birth of their children, “the greatest gift that Al ever gave me was to make me a mother.” This was despite the fact that the couple had just become parents.

At the 2004 Emmy Awards, where Angels in America won for outstanding miniseries, Pacino stands with Meryl Streep and director Mike Nichols. Angels in America also won for best actor in a limited series. In addition, Pacino was given an individual prize for the role of Roy Cohn that he played in the program.
His performance as Dr. Jack Kevorkian in the miniseries You Don’t Know Jack earned him the Emmy Award for best lead actor in a Movie or Miniseries in 2010. This was his second win in this category.

Jessica Chastain played with Al Pacino in a performance of Oscar Wilde’s Salome in 2006, the same year that Pacino performed in the piece on Broadway in 1992 and 2003. Before Chastain won an Oscar of her own, she shared the stage with Pacino.
The performance that took place at the Wadsworth Theatre in Los Angeles in 2006 was captured on film by Pacino and included in the documentary named Wilde Salome, which was published in 2018.

In 2007, he was one of the stars of the film Ocean’s Thirteen, which also featured George Clooney (who is seen above at the film’s premiere in the United States), Matt Damon, and Brad Pitt.
During the same year, he was also presented with the 35th annual AFI Life Achievement Award by the American Film Institute.

Along with James Taylor, members of the band the Eagles, Martha Argerich, and Mavis Staples, Al Pacino was one of the recipients of the Kennedy Center Honors in 2016.
Pacino is the father of three children: Julie Pacino, whom he has with his ex-wife Jan Tarrant, an acting instructor; his younger children with D’Angelo, Anton, and Olivia Pacino; and Julie Pacino, whom he shares with Jan Tarrant.
At this year’s Academy Awards, Al Pacino is photographed beside all three of his children.

In 2019, he and Robert De Niro, his co-star from The Godfather Part II, appeared together in the film The Irishman, which was directed by Martin Scorsese.
At the 63rd annual BFI London Film Festival, where the movie had its world premiere, these three gentlemen posed for a picture together.

House of Gucci was released in 2021, and he played the role of Aldo Gucci with Lady Gaga (who is seen here at the New York City premiere) and Adam Driver.
During the 2022 Academy Awards, Pacino, De Niro, and The Godfather director Francis Ford Coppola appeared on stage together to celebrate the landmark movie’s half-century jubilee.
I’m so grateful for my wonderful friends to come here to help me celebrate with you,” Coppola stated. “This is the endeavor that we began 50 years ago with really the most extraordinary collaborators, many of them legends, and so many of them that I can’t take the time to list them all, but you know them all very well.”
Coppola continued by saying, “So I’m going to only thank two from the bottom of my heart,” and he thanked Mario Puzo, the author of the Godfather books, and the late producer Robert Evans for their contributions.

The festivities carried on, and in June of 2022, De Niro and Pacino met together once again for The Godfather 50th Anniversary Screening, which took place at the United Palace Theater in New York City as part of the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival.

Pacino’s most recent role was as Meyer Offerman in the television series Hunters, which was based on actual events and followed a group of people who hunted Nazis in New York in the 1970s.
