When “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” started casting for the character of John Connor in 1991, the producers weren’t seeking for a new star to play the part. However, one of the challenges they had was finding a street-smart youngster to play the part.
They wanted a rough youngster, but none of the professional performers they watched had any kind of hardness in their performances. They appeared silly, surreal, and implausible whenever they attempted to be furious or aggressive.
The individuals in charge of casting did not want a jock who gave the impression that he or she could deal with anything that was thrown at them. Casting director Mali Finn spent the summer going to motocross races and camps in search of a youngster with “a quality in him that needed protecting.” Because the ideal child for the part needed to have “a quality in him that needed protecting,” the search took place throughout the summer.
She investigated local theaters as well as groups such as Boy’s and Girl’s Clubs, and in the end, she got in touch with the Pasadena Boy’s Club. Edward Walter Furlong was the only youngster that Finn saw in the camp, and he was seen by Finn leaning against a wall near the swimming pool.
Furlong, who was born in Glendale, California, recalls a lady smiling and starring at him when he was a child. He felt the woman was strange at the time. The little child glared angrily at the lady who approached him and asked if he would be interested in trying out for a role in a film.
A few days later, he got a phone call from someone who asked him whether he recalled the lady he’d spoken to earlier in the day. He found out that she was the casting director for “Terminator 2” and that she wanted him to try out for the role of Connor!
When Furlong found out that someone wanted him to try out for the movie, he was ecstatic. That night, he shared the news with his foster parents, his aunt, and his uncle. Even though he had his doubts about the veracity of the offer, Linda Hamilton requested him to perform for her following the first interview they had together.
Because Furlong had any experience in the performing arts, his audition did not go as planned. Due to the fact that he was timid and did not perform very well, he was almost removed from the pool of candidates for the position. The little youngster was anxious and lacking in experience, so he was unable to learn and repeat things straight immediately. Despite this, Finn persisted begging for another opportunity.
They hired an acting coach for Furlong so that he could improve his performance. When the young man went in for his last interview, he went in with the mindset that he wasn’t going to get the part, but as a result of the coaching he received, he ended up getting the part!
In recognition of his performance in “Terminator 2,” Furlong was given the MTV Movie Award for Best Breakthrough Role, and the Saturn Sci-Fi Award for Best Young Actor. After that, he worked with both indie and studio films, including the 1992 picture “American Heart.” Because of his work in that position, he was considered for a nomination for an IFP Spirit Award.
In addition, he had roles in the films “A Home of Our Own” (1993), “Little Odessa” (1994), “The Grass Harp” (1995), “Before and After” (1996), and “American History X” and “Pecker” (1998); nevertheless, he was unable to maintain his level of popularity in these roles.
The Fall from Grace Sustained by Edward
Finn was a reserved 13-year-old when Furlong first met him at the boy’s club in September 1990. At the time, Finn’s mother, Eleanor Tafoya, who worked at a youth center, had sent him to live with relatives due to the problems she was experiencing. Furlong was a youth counselor. One year later, he became a kid celebrity, but his family was not given enough time to adjust to the new circumstances.
After signing with CAA in 1997, Furlong featured in “Pet Sematary Two,” amongst many other parts; but, behind the scenes, his guardians argued over funds and authority, which resulted in their being unable to safeguard him as a child actor. Tafoya, who had just left Edward’s stepfather, Moses Torres, and who had refused to reveal to Edward who his real father was, was a participant in the fight.
In August of 1993, Tafoya was granted nominal guardianship over her nephew after she let her kid to live with her relatives. Furlong was taken in by her sister Nancy Tafoya and her half-brother Sean Furlong in May of 1990, and they acquired custody of him in September of 1991.
In September of 1991, a young boy’s legal and financial matters were entrusted to Los Angeles attorney Bruce Ross, who was designated as the boy’s guardian. In September 1992, Jacqueline Louise Domac, who had played Furlong’s stand-in on “Terminator 2,” began working as his private teacher. In September 1993, she allegedly brought him to her house in Los Angeles, at which point he was considered to be his live-in girlfriend.
During an interview that took place in 1994, both Furlong and Domac declined to speak on his private life. After James Cameron, the director of “Terminator 2,” signed the boy, he contacted Sean and asked whether they were aware of what they were getting themselves into. “Terminator 2”
Furlong was frustrated because shortly after filming on the film started, Tafoya and her brothers launched a custody struggle, which had already begun. However, B.J. Rack, one of the movie’s producers, said that the youngster was OK and that he could put the turmoil in the past so that he could act.
When Furlong made an appearance in “Pet Sematary Two,” fortunately, there were no issues; nevertheless, when he went on to act in “A Home of Our Own,” the drama began once again. When Domac was hired to work on the film as a tutor for Edward and the other young performers, there were rumors that she had romantic feelings for Edward, who was 15 at the time.
She was terminated when it was discovered that she had been playingfully wrestling with Furlong and another youngster, but Sean and Nancy didn’t think she had done anything illegal so they continued to use her as the boy’s teacher. Following the reestablishment of his mother’s role as his legal guardian, Furlong moved in with Domac and began providing financial assistance for her.
Ross was under the impression that taking away the actor’s stipend would not convince him to move back in with Tafoya. The lawyer had a feeling that the young actor would be more interested in working at a fast-food restaurant and staying in a hotel than in acting.
Paul Petersen, a former child star who is now the chairman of the group known as A Minor Consideration, claimed that Tafoya approached the organization for help after her son departed. However, specialists and other adults encouraged Furlong to continue living his life the way he did rather than reflecting on the fact that he was once a kid.

In 2019, Furlong said that playing the role of Connor had a profound impact on his life and allowed him to earn a livelihood. However, despite acting in films he directed in 1998, his career was never able to completely recover as a result of his actions.
Even before he was found, Furlong had a terrible existence. At the age of 15, after his breakthrough performance, he filed a lawsuit to be granted his freedom. He did not complete high school, drank alcohol, and eventually checked himself into rehabilitation.
Tafoyar’s son was arrested in 2013 for breaching his ex-wife Rachel Bella’s restraining order, which stemmed from an incident that occurred in the early 2000s and included allegations of domestic abuse made by Rachel.
Between October 2012 and May 2013, the actor was taken into custody many times on charges ranging from felony to misdemeanor domestic violence. In addition, his girlfriend filed a restraining order against him, and in March of 2013, he was given a sentence of one hundred and eighty days in jail for breaking the terms of his probation as well as the restraining order filed by his girlfriend.
When the actor, who was then 42 years old, reflected on his turbulent background, he said, “It was literally overnight success,” and he just wasn’t able to deal with it as a child, which is why he ended up becoming involved in things that weren’t healthy for him.
The famous actor said that as a youngster he was exposed to a lot of stuff he was unable to digest. He reflected on how insane his past profession seemed to him and continued, saying:
“It’s crazy for such a little child to have access to so much power. In particular if you don’t really have any parents.”
In 1996, when Furlong was 18 years old, he held the title of a “hot” teenage star and looked like a sweet child who’d lived a hard life but had a promising adulthood. He was fascinated by laser discs, so he went out and bought himself a sound system with the money he made from “Terminator 2,” and it was as if he “was in heaven.”
A few years later, the use of illicit drugs became his source of satisfaction, and he began abusing them while he was in his thirties. This condition would persist right up to the year 2006, when he gave birth to his son Ethan. His circumstances resulted in his being detained many than once, and he has said that the reason for his breakthrough role was the fact that he was so determined and accomplished so much at such a young age.
Since his arrest in 2013, when he entered treatment for addiction to illicit substances and attended therapy for domestic violence for a total of 52 weeks, the actor has remained mostly out of the public eye. After afterwards, there was an unexpected statement made about the next “Terminator” film.
However, following the presentation, people of social media brought attention to Edward’s previous imprisonment. This prompted Jacquie Marroquin, the director of programs at the non-profit California Partnership to End Domestic Violence (CPEDV), to issue a statement on the ways in which one may unlearn domestic violence.
Marroquin pointed out that receiving therapy was the first step, and that in order for the actor to change, people who were closest to him needed to accept responsibility. However, it was indicated that the advancement of the star would take some time, with inspections being performed in the intervening time.
After Furlong’s overdose on illicit drugs, the contract offer to repeat his part in 2003’s “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines” was rescinded. Furlong had also been given a contract to reprise his role in the film. The actor said that it “bummed” him out to lose the job that ultimately went to Nick Stahl. Stahl was the recipient of the role.
The 2019 film “Terminator: Dark Fate” marked Furlong’s return to the “Terminator” series; however, the role he played in the film was not very important. Nevertheless, it turned out to be one of the most prominent pieces he has done since his recurring part on “CSI: New York” was canceled in 2010. The disturbed actor was fortunate enough to be given a second opportunity in life.
Current Events in Edward’s Life and Future Acting Opportunities
As of July 2022, the actor has been clean for more than four years, after a string of convictions for various drug-related offenses, including one in 2016 for being under the influence of illicit drugs.
After finishing production on a movie called “Charlie’s Horse” in Texas with Brad Keller, Furlong was getting ready to restart his career in the film industry. In addition to reviving his career, the celebrity visited Global Implant Dentistry to get a new set of teeth implanted after the originals he had developed cavities and rotted away as a result of his drug addiction.
Furlong referred to his new chapter as his “second chance” and stated how wonderful it felt to be clean and back on set. He said that he did not feel hungover when he went to work and that the fact that there were other sober individuals was strange to him, with the celebrity providing the following explanation:
“If you’re not sober, you don’t hang out with the other people who are sober,” the group told him. It was a good time.”
The famous person stated that he liked the experience since it allowed him to be more present in the moment and because he loved working. He made a joke about how he hoped he wouldn’t be cast in the role of a sex worker or something like.
According to Furlong, it took some time for him to come to terms with the fact that he had his teeth extracted and replaced, but he now feels the procedure was worthwhile. He said that seeing his rotten teeth had been a frustrating experience and a constant reminder of what he’d done wrong, but he was happy that he had the treatment done.
“It’s all going to be okay,” he would tell his younger self, who was ready to embark on a career in Hollywood and was only 13 at the time, if he could look back on his long and successful career. He would also tell himself that it was beneficial to live in the present and that life should be appreciated in its whole, including both the good and the terrible moments that it inevitably brings.
Furlong said that if he could go back in time, he would advise himself to chill off and enjoy life since everything was going well. Nevertheless, he was happy to be learning that lesson and coming to terms with it in his 40s, and by the beginning of 2023, he had already appeared in two movies, namely “The Forest Hills” and “Heart of a Champion.”
The actor came to the conclusion that life was “much easier” than he had imagined, and as a result, he began to appreciate his sober self more. He also saw that other people felt the same way. His kid and him enjoy what can only be described as a “wonderful relationship,” and he is delighted with how uncomplicated his life has become recently.
In the end, Furlong said, “It’s amazing I’m still alive – there were a couple of close calls,” particularly considering that he was taking pills by the load and all the time, during the whole day.
He conceded that once he was in the thick of things, it was tough to see a way out, but now he wanted other people to know that there was a route out, even if it was a difficult one. The actor stated that it was the boldest thing he’d ever done, and he didn’t enjoy being controlled by other people or being a slave to anything. He added that he did it because he didn’t like being a slave.
Now, when Ethan’s dad wakes up, he doesn’t have to stress about whether or not he’ll be hung over or unable to remember what he did the day before since he won’t have to go to jail. In March of 2021, he submitted a photo of his dog on his profile, demonstrating that he had a canine companion.
