Selena Gomez is being really open and honest about her desire to start a family of her own someday.

The singer, who is 30 years old, discussed her desire to have children in the future during an interview with Rolling Stone that was conducted for the purpose of creating the magazine’s most recent cover story. She also discussed the challenges that she anticipates facing as a parent.

Gomez revealed to the magazine that she once went to visit a friend who was attempting to conceive a child. She recalled that after their time together, she was crying in her car and thinking about the fact that the two medications she is taking for her bipolar disorder will most likely prevent her from ever being able to carry her own children. This was her recollection of what happened after their time together.

Gomez told the publication, “That’s a very huge, large, present thing in my life,” before adding that she is hoping that she will still become a mom in the years to come through other ways. “That’s a very big, big, present thing in my life,” Gomez said.

Regarding the possibility of her having children, she continued by saying, “However I intended to have them, I will.”

According to an article on WebMD that was written by doctors and vetted by other medical professionals, drugs used to treat bipolar disorder have the potential to cause birth defects such as neural tube defects, heart defects, as well as developmental delay or neurobehavioral disorders. However, because the symptoms of bipolar disorder can become more severe during pregnancy, some doctors advise patients to continue taking these medications right up until the moment they give birth.

Gomez went into length elsewhere in the conversation regarding an experience of psychosis that she went through in 2018. She spent several months in treatment while suffering paranoia and having difficulties trusting individuals around her. She noted that she doesn’t remember much from the time period, but she added that she did spend some time in treatment. According to RS, the artist known as “Rare” had a hard time being recognized by her close friends at the time, and her mother found out about the entire issue from TMZ.

According to Gomez, someone experiencing psychosis may feel themselves “walking out of psychosis” over the course of a period of time that is difficult to predict. Prior to receiving a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, Gomez tried a number of different medications while her physicians attempted to determine the optimal medication combination.

Her condition ultimately improved, but the meds made her feel “gone,” as she stated, until a different psychiatrist pulled her off all but two of the drugs she was on. She shared with RS that “He really guided me.” “On the other hand, I had to go through what is effectively a detox process from the meds I was taking. It was necessary for me to figure out how to recall specific terms. Whenever we were together and talking, I would lose track of time and place. I had to put in a lot of effort in order to (a) acknowledge that I suffered from bipolar disorder and (b) figure out how to manage it because it wasn’t going away anytime soon.”

Gomez, who has been candid for a long time about her struggles with anxiety and melancholy, disclosed her diagnosis of bipolar disorder in April 2020 during an episode of Miley Cyrus’ Bright Minded show that aired on Instagram Live.

During that time, she was quoted as saying, “Recently I went to one of the best mental hospitals in America, McLean Hospital, and I mentioned that, after years of suffering through a lot of different things, I finally understood that I was bipolar.” “When I make an effort to acquire more knowledge, I find that it is beneficial to me. When I am aware of it, it no longer frightens me… I was curious about it to the point of obsession, and that helped me get over my fear of it.”

Gomez shared additional details with host Kelly Clarkson regarding her time spent at the McLean Hospital in Massachusetts on the episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show that aired on Wednesday. “It is one of the greatest institutions, and they pretty much cover all there is to cover in the field of mental health. Therefore, I was able to announce my diagnosis for the very first time out loud, “she was able to recall. “And it gave me such strength, and despite the difficulty, I’m so glad I did it.”

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, bipolar disorder is a mental condition that “causes extraordinary swings in mood, energy, activity levels, focus, and the capacity to carry out day-to-day tasks.” Bipolar disorder also affects a person’s ability to carry out day-to-day work.

In the upcoming documentary titled Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me, Gomez is going to openly discuss both her achievements and her struggles in the realm of mental health.

During the launch of her new project for Apple TV+ in Los Angeles, Gomez spoke with PEOPLE in an exclusive interview about how she perceives the world in the modern era.

She started off by saying, “Let’s begin with the fact that I have a very healthy relationship with my therapist.” “I am making use of my Rare Impact Fund in many ways. I’m engaging in these discussions and interacting with new folks.”

Continued Gomez, “I attended the symposium on mental health that was held at the White House and… I want to take as many preventative measures as I possibly can.”
