An infant who holds the record for the shortest time between births, having been born at only 21 weeks, just celebrated his first birthday.

Nash Keen was born at the University of Iowa Health Care on July 5, 2024, 133 days before his due date. According to Guinness World Records, he is currently being acknowledged as the most preterm infant on record. His birth occurred on July 5, 2024. Previously, the record was held by Curtis Means, who was born 21 weeks and 1 day beyond his due date.

At the time of his birth, Nash weighed just 10 ounces, which is similar to the weight of a grapefruit, and he measured 9.5 inches in length. After that, he was transported to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of the hospital, which is a Level IV facility. There, he overcame what Dr. Amy Stanford of the hospital characterized as “many critical challenges.”

Now that they are allowed to celebrate their son, Nash’s parents, Mollie and Randall Keen, are overjoyed to achieve this milestone.

Mollie said that it is emotional in a variety of ways, including pride, thankfulness, and even some pain due to the fact that his path has been so different. Not only that, but it seems like a win beyond all else,”

Mollie described the first few days of Nash’s existence as “a blur of fear, uncertainty, and hope,” as stated by the agency that is responsible for preserving records.

The mother acknowledged that she was “very nervous” when she finally had the chance to touch her kid for the first time when he was three weeks old or older.

To remember that her kid “was covered in wires and monitors” at the time, she added, “He was so tiny, I could barely even feel him on my chest.” She was referring to the fact that her son was so small.

Nash had a difficult beginning, but according to Dr. Stanford, he made “steady progress” and was ultimately able to go home in January 2025, after spending six months in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The development that Nash has made “has been amazing,” according to Mollie, who said that she and her husband Randall are “incredibly proud of how far Nash has come.”

Additionally, Nash is “on oxygen, has a feeding tube, and wears hearing aids for mild hearing loss,” as stated by his mother, who also mentions that he attends “a specialized medical daycare.” Despite this, Nash is still considered to have “some medical needs.”

On the occasion of Nash’s first birthday, he was presented with an astounding seventy new costumes, educational toys, and diapers. In addition, his physicians provided him with permission to consume cake that was topped with more whipped cream.

The next thing that his mother said was, “Nash is not just a record breaker; he is a heart-stealer.” Starting from the very beginning, our family and friends came together to support him, and as his story spread, the love that they felt for him also grew.

While this was going on, Dr. Stanford said that Nash and the Keen family had provided them with valuable lessons in hope. “The tenacity and determination that they have shown has been truly motivating,” she remarked.

She concluded by saying, “Seeing Nash’s smile and hearing his giggles reminds me every day why it’s so important to keep advocating for our patients and their families, even in the most challenging circumstances.”
