When Nabors was visiting the Ala Moana Shopping Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1975, his future business partner, Stan Cadwallader, approached him and asked if he was Jim Nabors. This was the first time that Nabors and Cadwallader met paths. After providing an affirmative response, Nabors said that he was celebrating his birthday and was in possession of a huge bottle of Dom Perignon that he had just been gifted.
After deciding to have a meal together, the two people found that they had a lot in common. Both of them had moved to the island from a distant mainland location. Cadwallader came from a rural area in the state of Michigan, whereas Nabors was born in the city of Sylacauga in the state of Alabama.
When they first met, Cadwallader was a fireman in Honolulu and lived on his boat, while Nabors had already established a successful career in the entertainment industry in Hollywood. As luck would have it, Nabors, who had been visiting Hawaii for vacations since the 1960s, made the decision to relocate permanently to Hawaii in 1976 from his home in Bel Air, California. It is possible that Nabors and Cadwallader’s lives would not have ever crossed if he had not relocated to Hawaii.
It didn’t take long for Nabors and Cadwallader to develop feelings for one another and start a relationship. Later on, they repaired and updated a run-down house in Diamond Head that Nabors had already owned. Following Nabors’ relocation to California, he and Cadwallader began co-managing a macadamia nut plantation in Maui. During this time, they not only became personal partners but also business partners.
Both in life and in business, the two individuals referred to themselves as each other’s closest friends. They were content with their sedate existence far off from the sparkle and glamour of Hollywood.
On January 15, 2013, Nabors tied the knot with Cadwallader, his longtime companion. The ceremony took place in Seattle, Washington. Before making their relationship known to the general world, the couple had been together for a total of 38 years. After discovering that they did not have any legal rights as a couple, they made the decision to be married. The event was held in the couple’s suite at the Fairmont Olympic Hotel, and a judge presided over the proceedings. A handful of the couple’s closest friends served as witnesses.
The actor who played “The Lost Saucer” was out in the workplace and among his friends when he was working in Hollywood, but he had never disclosed his sexual orientation in a public forum until that moment. He highlighted that even though it was a private matter, he wasn’t embarrassed by other people knowing about it. Despite the fact that he did not see himself as an activist, he expressed joy and thanks for his long-lasting connection with Cadwallader.
During the course of his life, not only did Nabors have a flourishing love life, but he also battled severe asthma, hepatitis B, liver failure, a liver transplant, knee reconstruction, a pacemaker implant, and a new heart valve. All of these health issues required him to undergo medical procedures.
At the age of 87, Nabors passed away at his home in Hawaii on December 30, 2017, after a long and happy life. During the closing moments of his life, Cadwallader, who was his spouse, was by his side. Cadwallader claimed that Nabors had been examined by medical professionals, but in the end, he was discharged from the hospital and sent home. Cadwallader said that Nabors was a lovely guy who will be sorely missed after hearing the news of his demise, which created a gap in the community.
Before being married in 2013, Nabors and Cadwallader had previously participated in a civil union ceremony in Honolulu in 2012, which marked the beginning of their relationship. The time period in which both of them were raised probably had a role in their decision to keep their romantic involvement somewhat under wraps.
They had been living together in their house in Diamond Head, Hawaii, for the last four decades and had grown to love spending time on their patio, which overlooked their pool and the breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean. However, as a result of Nabors’ health problems, including the need for a liver transplant, the couple had made the decision to remain in Hawaii rather than engage in considerable travel.
As of May 2014, when they were asked to reflect on their life, Nabors had no regrets and merely expressed thanks for the time they had spent together. Cadwallader was the person he thought of as closest to him, which highlights how important it is to have a buddy who is there for you.
