Construction workers in St. Louis, Missouri, saw a white paw protruding from an empty pipe on a warm spring day. The city is located in the state of Missouri. As soon as they turned the corner, they were greeted by two eyes the color of ice and a snarl that suggested they should be afraid. The workmen heard echoes of little whimpers reverberating deep inside the pipes that surrounded them, but the dog wouldn’t allow them to approach near enough to check.

The employees had the bright idea to seek assistance from Stray Rescue of St. Louis (SRSL), since they were under the impression that they had come upon a guarding mother and her young. When Donna Lochmann, the chief life saving officer for SRSL, arrived at the scene, she too arrived at the same conclusion.

“She was kind of sticking her head out of the pipe and growling at us,” Lochmann told The Dodo of the dog’s behavior. “She was just being the responsible mother that she should be and protecting her puppies.”

Lochmann began tossing pieces of Vienna sausages in the direction of the dog in an effort to gain the canine’s confidence. She patiently inched her way closer to the pipe with each goodie that was taken, and before long, she was near enough to the pipe to be able to put her leash over the pup’s neck.

After encountering some resistance, Lochmann was successful in extracting the dog from the pipe in a secure and safe manner. It didn’t take Lochmann very long to come to the conclusion that they had been completely incorrect about the identification of the puppy the whole time.

“As I finally pulled her out of the pipe, I saw that she wasn’t a ‘her’ at all,” Lochmann stated. “She was an it.” It turned out that the dog was a male and not a female.

It came as a complete surprise to Lochmann when she learned that the dog, whose she had given the name Peter Piper, was in fact acting as a guardian father.

“I’ve had times when the dad is there with the mom, but I don’t remember another rescue where it was just the dad with puppies and there was no mom,” Lochmann said. “I’ve had times when the dad is there with the mom.” “The occurrence of something like that is extremely unusual.”

After ensuring that Peter Piper was secure in her Jeep, Lochmann turned her attention to save his children. She immediately identified which pipes the pups were trapped in and, with the assistance of her fellow rescuer, began to pull the puppies out of the pipes one at a time using a long stick.

“These guys were a little harder because they decided to sit right in the middle of the pipes.” “However, we were successful in rescuing each individual one at a time.”

At long last, the pups had been removed from the drains, and the members of the little family were prepared to be reunified. While Lochmann was driving them to the shelter, Peter and his kids, the ages of which were believed to be somewhere about four months, dropped off to sleep.

After the rescue, Peter did not continue to attempt to defend the pups from Lochmann and I, as stated by Lochmann. You could tell that everyone in the room was feeling a sense of relief.

The news that Peter Piper and his three puppies, Penelope Piper, Paisley Piper, and Patrick Piper, were all given clean bills of health by the veterinarian sent another wave of relief through SLSR. The doting father did an excellent job of guarding his young, and as a reward, he was allowed to return to his natural state as a dog.

According to Lochmann, “Peter Piper turned out to be nothing short of an absolute gentleman.” “Everyone in this place fell head over heels in love with him.”

Thank goodness, all of the dogs found homes rather quickly after they were brought in. Since then, Penelope has found the family that will love and care for her till the end of time, while Peter, Paisley, and Patrick are all still looking for their happily-ever-afters.

The animal rescue workers at SRSL can’t wait till the remaining members of the pack are finally able to make themselves at home in their new homes for good. They are going to keep telling people about this great father and his gorgeous survival pups till that time comes.
