Sometimes, a single unexpected opportunity can completely change the course of someone’s life. For David Tolley, that life-changing moment came on December 19, 1985, while *The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson* was being recorded.
That evening, the show’s scheduled pianist, Horacio Gutiérrez, was unable to perform because of a hand injury. Johnny Carson turned to the audience and asked if anyone knew how to play the piano. David Tolley gathered his courage, raised his hand, and was invited to take the stage.
What happened next astonished everyone. Tolley sat down at the piano and delivered a stunning performance of “Memory” from the musical *Cats*. His unexpected musical ability captivated the audience and earned him a standing ovation.
His story is a wonderful reminder that sometimes all it takes is one unexpected opportunity for extraordinary talent to shine.
