In one of the standout auditions from America’s Got Talent Season 19, Canadian singer-songwriter Alex Sampson delivered a performance that deeply impressed both the judges and the audience. The 20-year-old artist from Atikokan, Ontario, stepped onto the stage visibly nervous, but he brought with him an original song titled “Pretty Baby”—a piece that combined a vintage crooner style with a soft, modern emotional touch.

From the moment he began singing, the atmosphere in the room shifted. The song’s light, nostalgic arrangement echoed the feel of classic love ballads, prompting judges and viewers to note that it could easily belong in a Martin Scorsese film set in the 1950s or 1960s. The performance felt fresh and unexpected, leading all four judges to vote “yes,” sending Sampson forward in the competition.

What truly set his audition apart wasn’t just his vocal talent—though his smooth tone and emotional delivery stood out—but his songwriting. In a competition often filled with covers, Sampson earned praise for presenting something original, showcasing both creativity and artistry.

The judges also pointed out the “old soul” quality in his voice, with Howie Mandel even drawing comparisons to the classic sound of Herman’s Hermits. Heidi Klum, Sofia Vergara, and Simon Cowell all commended his stage presence, confidence, and decision to perform his own material instead of a well-known song.

Sampson’s natural charm and commitment to authenticity made his audition one of the most memorable of the season. While his journey continued with mixed results in later rounds, his first performance remained a highlight, remembered for its emotional depth and nostalgic feel.
